More sales and more revenue are great signs that your business is growing.

But here's something that's easy to overlook:

You may need to set aside more for quarterly taxes. Payroll may increase. You may be taking more money out of the business. And you may be thinking about hiring, buying equipment, or expanding.

The question is:

This is why I encourage business owners to look beyond the tax return and ask a few bigger questions:
Am I setting aside enough for taxes?
Am I paying myself the right way?
Do I have enough cash available for the business?
Can I afford to make that next investment?
Is my business still set up the right way for what I'm earning today?

Good tax planning should help you make better business decisions throughout the year, not simply tell you what you owe when it's time to file.

If your business has grown or changed recently, it may be a good time to take another look at how it's structured.

If you own a business, your retirement plan and business structure are connected.

When you think about retirement planning, you probably think about how much you're saving and when you'd like to retire.

But if you own a business, there's another piece to consider:

Your entity can play a role in the retirement strategies available to you and how those plans are funded. Depending on your business, options might include:
Solo 401(k)
SEP IRA
Safe Harbor Plan
Cash Balance Plan

As your business grows and your income changes, the retirement strategy that made sense a few years ago may not be the best fit today.

That's why retirement planning shouldn't happen separately from your overall business and tax strategy.

Hiring your first employee is an exciting milestone. Itโ€™s a sign that your business is growing.

But adding someone to your team also brings new responsibilities, and sometimes new questions.

Should they be a W-2 employee or a 1099 contractor? What payroll and employment taxes are you responsible for? Do you need workersโ€™ compensation coverage? And does the way your business is currently structured still make sense as you grow?

These decisions can have an impact on your taxes, compliance responsibilities, and plans for the future.

Thatโ€™s why hiring is a good time to take another look at your entity strategy and make sure it still supports the business youโ€™re building.

One of the questions I hear from business owners is:

And my answer is often: ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ๐›๐ž.

Because an LLC is only part of the picture. An LLC is your legal structure. How your business is taxed is a separate decision, and that decision can have a meaningful impact as your business grows.

Depending on your situation, an LLC can be taxed as a sole proprietorship, partnership, S-Corporation, or C-Corporation.

So instead of starting with:

A better question may be:

The answer depends on your profitability, ownership structure, growth plans, and what you want the business to look like in the future. And if you already have an LLC, this is still a question worth revisiting. What worked when you started your business may not be the best fit for where your business is today.

Itโ€™s one of the most common recommendations business owners hear: โ€œYou should become an S-Corp. Youโ€™ll save on taxes.โ€

Sometimes, that may be true. But thereโ€™s more to the decision.

An S-Corporation also comes with additional responsibilities, including payroll, reasonable compensation requirements, and ongoing compliance.

Before making an S-Corp election, consider:
Is your business consistently profitable?
How will you determine reasonable compensation?
Are you prepared for payroll and additional compliance requirements?
Does the structure support where your business is headed?

When you started your business, you made the best decisions you could with the information you had at the time.

But businesses aren't meant to stay the same: Revenue grows, employees are hired, partners are added, retirement planning becomes more important and expansion opportunities arise.

The business you have today may look very different from the one you started.

Many business owners never revisit that decision, even though their business has changed significantly.

A periodic review should consider:
Your current tax classification
Business profitability
Payroll and compensation strategy
Retirement planning opportunities
Ownership changes
State tax considerations

Your entity strategy shouldn't remain frozen in time. It should evolve alongside your business and continue supporting your goals as your business grows.

If it's been a while since you last reviewed your entity strategy, now may be the right time.

Many business owners think their entity is a decision they made when they first started their business and then never think about it again.

But as your business grows, your entity strategy should grow with it.

Your business structure can influence much more than your taxes. It can affect:
How you compensate yourself
Hiring employees
Retirement planning opportunities
Cash flow management
Bringing on partners or investors
Succession and exit planning

The goal isn't simply to reduce taxes today. It's to build a framework that supports your business as it grows and evolves.

Many business owners believe IRS audits are random. In reality, they are pattern driven.

Understanding what the IRS looks for can help you stay compliant and avoid unnecessary risk.

Here are three key areas they focus on:
Reasonable compensation vs. distributions
Consistency across reported income and filings
Proper documentation to support deductions and positions

A proactive approach to these areas can make a significant difference in your audit risk profile.
