01/29/2026
Dear Valued Client,
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that Monday, January 26, 2026, will be the official start of the 2026 tax season. On this date, the IRS will begin accepting and processing 2025 individual federal tax returns.
Refund Timing
While the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, refund timing can vary. Taxpayers should avoid relying on a specific refund date for major purchases or bill payments. Refunds may take longer if:
The return contains errors or missing information
Additional review is needed due to identity theft or fraud concerns
A refund is requested by paper check, which may take up to an additional six weeks
Earned Income & Child Tax Credits (PATH Act)
Under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds for returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The IRS must hold the entire refund, not just the credit portion, until the required review is completed.
Warm regards,
G and A Tax and Accounting, Inc.
