Kia and Hyundai Thefts on the Rise
Kia and Hyundai Theft Prevention Tips
For anyone paying attention, it has been well known for the last 6 months that thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been on the rise. Thieves inspired by “how to” instructions posted on social media, are targeting, and stealing certain Kia and Hyundai models with little effort as many don’t have engine immobilizers, a common theft deterrent device. The vehicles at risk for car thieves are all 2011 to 2021 Kia vehicles and 2015 to 2021 Hyundai vehicles equipped with standard key ignitions. Vehicles with a push-button start are not affected.
The increase in vehicle thefts for Kia and Hyundais has been so great that some insurers are no longer accepting new policies for certain Kia and Hyundai models and owners of these vehicles may find it more difficult to get coverage at an affordable price. Vehicle theft is devastating for your customers, costly for insurers and, as an agency owner, can adversely affect your loss ratios with your carriers. It is important that you inform your customers of this potential hazard and suggest they take steps to avoid being a victim of car thieves.
If you have any customers with Kia or Hyundai vehicles meeting the criteria listed above, please suggest they take the following measures to avoid vehicle theft:
Install an anti-theft device such as a steering wheel lock, vehicle immobilizer or tracking device.
If your vehicle is parked outside overnight, park in a well-lit area.
Keep valuables out of sight, locked in the glove box or trunk.
Never leave your keys in the car when it is unattended.
Always lock your car.
Never leave or keep your house keys, garage door opener and vehicle title in your car.
Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia are offering free steering wheel locks distributed through local police departments to Hyundai and Kia owners as a theft deterrent. Hyundai is also offering a glass-break sensor security kit; however, customers will have to pay for the device and installation costs. Free anti-theft software upgrades are in the works, so please refer your customers to the appropriate manufacturer for information on vehicle eligibility and repair scheduling.
