BREAKING NEWS: The IRS' technical systems went down early today, their busiest day of the year. All taxpayers have automatically received an extension of the deadline (to file and pay). Returns are now due by midnight TOMORROW, April 18, due to the system outage.

Their systems are back online, and all electronic filings and payments should be a go.

News pages are abuzz with the grim reality of the recent (massive) Facebook data breach. Here are some valuable tips about how to know if your information was compromised, and how to protect yourself moving forward.

The first quarterly payment of estimated taxes is due on Tuesday, the 17th (the same day individual tax returns are due). Remember that not paying these quarterly payments (or being late to do so) can mean penalties for you -- even if at the end of the year it turns out that the IRS owes you a refund. It's definitely in your best interest to keep on top of what you owe and pay on time, every time.

Most people are counting down the days, once their return is filed, to when their refund money lands in their bank account. The IRS advises that most refunds are issued within 3 weeks (if you e-file, and opt for direct deposit). It's possible for it to take a bit longer, but for the most part, under 21 days is what you can expect.
