Is there something this October that has you preoccupied, anxious, or discouraged? Here are a few words of encouragement: don’t give up.

As one of our nation’s most brilliant and determined inventors once said:

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” - Thomas Edison

Did you know that you can make a $ for $ tax CREDIT donation to help fund the private school tuition for Arizona students? This is not a deduction, this is a credit, which essentially redirects your state tax dollars directly to a child and/or private school.

Happy Hopeiness Wednesday!!! Today’s Hopeiness is shared by Amanda Wray founder of Next Up Financial Planning

Amanda writes:

The English theologian and historian Thomas Fuller once said 'the darkest hour is just before the dawn.’ The quote has so much personal meaning to me, in fact my younger child’s middle name is Dawn in honor of this quote. It’s so relevant today as we have experienced so much darkness with COVID-19 pandemic and the overall unrest in our country. I do believe that trying times cause a powerful shift towards a better tomorrow.

In my business, I often meet people during their darkest hour, be it the death of a spouse, a divorce, or a financial setback. The darkness can give us hope with the dawn of a new day. I’m always inspired by the strength and hope of my clients going through dark times. It’s incredibily rewarding to be able to help shine a light on the their path out of the darkness.

Thank you for sharing this reminder, Amanda. The reminder that today is a new day and a new beginning to something great. How do you choose to make it a great for yourself and others?

Did anyone predict that the S&P 500 would be up more than 50% than where it was 12 months ago? This last year emphasizes the importance of having a financial plan before a crisis strikes. What most people don't know is that a good financial advisor will actually plan for market corrections to occur once or twice every ten years. As a Behavioral Financial Advisor, it is my job to help clients avoid the temptation of making emotional decisions based on fear. If market anxiety keeps you up at night, it might be time to talk to a financial advisor and make a plan.

The best way to deal with uncertainty is to plan for it. If you don’t already have a plan that includes crises among the range of possible outcomes, it’s never too late to create one.

I had a lot of questions about GameStop and the WallStreetBets Reddit forum last week. I described it as playing catch with a knife...someone is going to catch the blade on the inevitable descent.

"For every individual who got in and out of a hot stock at the right time, there’s another who bought or sold at the wrong time. If you treat the market like a casino, not only do you have to pick the right stock, but also the right moment."

Successful investors know that Time in the Market is always better than Timing the Market. Having a well-balanced portfolio with the appropriate risk tolerance and a regular savings plan is essential.

If the GameStop excitement piqued your interest in investing, but you don't want to play catch with knives, Next Up can help!
