how snowy does it actually get in Star Idaho

Anytime I post anything that isn’t winter, my comments say “now show us winter,” like I’m hiding it.

I’m not. Star, Idaho has four real seasons, and I post every single one of them throughout the year. This is what winter looks like when it shows up.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth. It is not a postcard every single day. Some mornings I’m scraping ice off the windshield wondering what I signed up for.

But it is also our kids sliding down the ditch around the corner from our house on a random Tuesday, and tubing at Eagle Island State Park twenty minutes from home, no flight, no hotel, no six months of planning it.

Nobody talks about the version where winter is just... part of a normal life instead of a disaster you have to survive.

If you’re waiting for me to post something miserable to prove Idaho isn’t perfect, I’m not going to do it, because that’s not actually the truth either.

Not everyone should move here for the winters. If snow sounds like a hassle to you, it will always feel like one, and that’s a real reason to stay put.

But if you’ve been dreaming about your kids having this kind of ordinary, this is what it actually looks like, cold mornings and all.

is winter bad in Star Idaho

Growing up, my kids’ version of a snow day was a plane ticket and a hotel room.

That was the whole plan every winter. Fly somewhere, pay for it, come home three days later and go back to 75 and sunny like nothing happened.

Now snow is just part of a normal week. Some days it’s sliding down the ditch around the corner from our house on a random Tuesday. Some days it’s tubing at Eagle Island State Park, twenty minutes from home, no flight, no hotel, no six months of planning it.

I get asked all the time if Idaho winters are worth it, if it’s too much snow, too cold, too far from everything they knew.

Here’s the truth. It’s not always easy. Some mornings I’m scraping ice off the windshield wondering what I signed up for.

But then I watch them out there, not performing for a camera, not on a once a year vacation, just living an actual season minutes from home, and I remember exactly why we left.

Not everyone wants this. If snow sounds like a hassle to you, it will always feel like one.

But if you’ve ever wanted your kids to have this kind of ordinary, this is what it looks like.

What does it actually cost to stay in California instead of moving to Star, Idaho?

I hear it all the time. “We want to move but we’re scared of the cost.”

Let’s actually do that math.

Staying in California means property taxes stacked on top of a mortgage that already eats half your paycheck. It means income tax that keeps climbing every year. It means paying premium prices for square footage you don’t even have, let alone land.

Moving to Star can mean acreage if that’s the budget, or just more space and breathing room than California ever gave them. Either way, it’s usually more than what they’re already paying for less back home.

Nobody adds up what staying is actually costing them. The stress. The commute. The savings account that never grows no matter how careful you are. That’s the real bill, and it’s due every single month whether you move or not.

I’m not saying Star is for everyone. Not everyone should move to Idaho.

But if you’re only pricing out the cost of going and never pricing out the cost of staying, you’re doing the math wrong.

So what’s staying actually costing you?
