When I talk to young families or my clients’ children, one of the biggest conversations is, when should they start saving for retirement and how much should they be putting away. The real answer is you should have a healthy financial foundation before you even begin to think about investing. This means having the appropriate amount in savings, a rainy-day fund, and having your household debt under control. When you don’t have a strong financial foundation or enough savings but experience a large expense, the only avenue to pay for that is by going into debt. This can compound and get out of control very quickly. Don’t let money cost you money and wind up in a potentially worse financial situation that will be difficult to climb out of.
