According to a 2009 Gallup poll, on average, an American spends $73 on Friday night and $76 on Saturday night. This figure is nearly $20 more than the amount spent on Mondays and Tuesdays (respectively $56 & $55).
Just imagine what the costs would be today in 2017?!?!?

Just because it's the weekend and maybe even payday, doesn't mean it's time to live like Rockefeller.

Yes, you worked hard all week and were busy with kids; it's important to play a little, but can we suggest you find a frugal way to spend a Friday night that still gives you that feeling of "treating yourself"?

Here are a few things you can do this weekend to save some cash and still have the feeling of "living a little":
1. Enjoy happy hour instead of a full-priced dinner
2. Go to a matinee movie instead of a late night feature film
3. Make planning and preparing meals a family affair! Meal prep for the week ahead on Sundays and save money throughout the week on drive-thru and takeout.

Money Tip Monday: Tipping advice

Over the weekend, you likely enjoyed a few meals out. While technology has made it easy with tip calculator apps, there is an easy tipping trick that helps keep your math skills sharp, too.

Next time you’re out to eat and not sure how much to tip your waiter, try this: double the tax.

Depending on where you live, this number will be between 12 and 20% of your total bill. Depending upon the service, you can then adjust up as needed.

Do you have other areas you'd like money saving and/or tax advice? We are all ears--share with us so we can do the research and save you time (and money!), too!

"Let's Face It"
Financial Fitness Friday

If you're wanting to save some cash, you have to have know where your cash flow is going in order to determine where you might be able to pinch some pennies.

So to get a baseline, we encourage you to a fitness challenge.

For the next 21 days instead of using credit or debit card for purchases (autopay/online bills or acceptable) use cash and track your spending for every penny.

At the end of the 3 weeks, calculate how much you spent and where the majority of your spending occurred.

Compare this to 3 weeks of last month's spending by checking your online statement.

With this newfound awareness, you will be able to determine where you can (and most likely should) cut some mindless spending and you will be on your way to creating a plan for your financial and savings goals.

It's finally here-happy first day of spring!

Most likely, spring cleaning will creep on to your to-do list for the next few weekends.

As you transition your closet, moving sweaters to the bottom, tank tops to the top, you might be dreaming of that summer vacation and wondering where you'll get the extra funds to pay for sand between your toes and a view of the ocean....

One saving tip that also tidies your closet is selling some of your high-end label and gently used clothing to consignment shops.

Even if you get less than 1/2 of what you initially paid, cleaning every family members closet can add up to the price of a day at Disney...

How many times have you walked out of Wal-Mart wondering how you just blew $50?

Those bags of clearance Valentine's candy for the office or the latest "As Seen on TV!" item were impulse buys and now you are left with less cash to stash.

Here are a few pointers to avoid impulse buying and nonsense spending:

1. Have a list, not just in your mind, but in your hand. This keeps you focused and you are less likely to wonder through the aisles picking up random, unnecessary items.

2. Pay with cash. Research proves that consumers spend on average 35% more when paying with plastic. (Either credit or debit). Paying with plastic feels more like Monopoly money and you are more inclined to swipe away. Also, paying with cash gives you a fixed limit.

3. Shop solo. While having your BFF's opinion to tell you, "Those jeans look awesome! You HAVE to have them!", her opinions can add up to $$$ quickly and leave your wallet (or bank account) empty.

Have a tip to share? We're all ears.

Tax Tip Tuesday

While it might not look much like spring cleaning here in western PA on this snowy Tuesday afternoon, one thing you might want to add to your to-do-list is to organize or revamp your filing system.

If you’ve never been one for keeping tabs on financial paperwork, spend some time getting organized, and establish a system that will work for you.

This is a helpful practice from a tax perspective, but it also allows you to declutter and organize your life--which often manifests into organization in other areas of your life, too.

Finally, it's especially important to keep receipts in case you are audited. The rule of thumb is to save your records, tax documents, and receipts for about seven years.

Need help sorting and itemizing these tricky receipts?

We'd love to help you get organized and maximize more tax tips, too.

March is national frozen foods month!
This is a great time to stock up on everything from frozen pizza, to veggies, to fish. (Hello, Lent!)

There are lots of good sales on frozen items and coupons, too, so double up on the deals and savings over the next few weeks.
