Your bank balance is not your profit.

I know it feels like it should be. You open the account, see money sitting there, and think things must be fine.

But that money may already be needed for payroll, sales tax, estimated taxes, credit cards, subscriptions, upcoming bills, or owner pay.

That is why your reports matter. Your bookkeeping should show what came in, what went out, what is still owed, and what is actually left.

Your bank balance can show what is in the account today, but it does not tell you whether your business is profitable. Here’s why your reports matter more.

Your profit and loss report is trying to tell you something.

Sometimes it shows you that things are going well.

Sometimes it points out expenses that need a closer look.

And sometimes it shows that the categories need a little cleanup before year-end.

July is a great time to review your P&L because there’s still time to adjust spending, review pricing, clean up messy categories, and make sure tax savings are on track.

Your profit and loss report should tell you what your business earned, spent, and kept. July is a great time to review it before year-end decisions sneak up on you.

As we head into the 250th Independence Day weekend, I’m thinking about a different kind of independence.

The business kind.

The kind where you know what’s happening with your money, your reports make sense, your invoices are cleaned up, and tax season doesn’t feel like a jump scare.

Knowing your numbers gives you more control over your business decisions.

And July is a really good time to check in.

Tax season is not tomorrow, which is exactly why now is a good time to look at things. 😄

Mid-year is the sweet spot for reviewing your books, checking estimated taxes, collecting W-9s, cleaning up weird transactions, and making sure your business numbers actually make sense.

Future you will appreciate this. So will your tax preparer.

This week’s blog post walks through what to review before tax season sneaks up.

Are you busy… or are you profitable?

Because those are not always the same thing. 😬

You can have a full schedule, lots of clients, and plenty of work coming in, but still feel like the money disappears too fast.

That’s usually a sign that the numbers need a closer look.

This week’s blog post talks about the difference between being busy and being profitable, especially for service business owners.

Do you actually look at your Profit & Loss report, or do you just scroll to the bottom number and hope for the best?

No judgment. A lot of business owners do that.

But your P&L can tell you so much more. It can show what’s working, what’s getting expensive, whether pricing needs attention, and whether the books are clean enough to trust.

This week’s blog post explains it in normal-person language.

Have you ever looked at your bookkeeping and thought, “I don’t even know where to start”?

That’s usually the point where cleanup can help.

Messy books don’t mean you did anything wrong. They usually mean the system got away from you, transactions were guessed at, or things piled up while you were busy running the actual business.

This week’s blog post walks through how bookkeeping cleanup works in plain English.

Happy Pride Month 🌈

Dunham Bookkeeping Services is proud to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, this month and all year long.

I believe every business owner deserves to feel respected, safe, and supported when they hand over the vulnerable parts of their business, especially their money, records, and big messy questions. That includes LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, therapists, service providers, and anyone building something meaningful while also trying to keep the books from turning into a gremlin.

You’re welcome here. Your business is welcome here. And I’m proud to support a community built on courage, joy, honesty, and showing up as yourself.

Happy Pride 🏳️‍🌈

Messy books usually have a reason.

It’s not always that you “did something wrong.” A lot of bookkeeping messes come from inconsistent processes, too many disconnected systems, missing documentation, unreconciled accounts, or plain old avoidance because the whole thing feels overwhelming.

This week’s blog breaks down what might actually be making your books messy, and how to figure out what needs fixing first.

Checking your bank account is not the same thing as knowing how your business is doing.

Your bank balance can tell you what is sitting there right now, but it does not tell you whether you’re profitable, what bills are coming up, who still owes you money, or whether your business is actually moving in the right direction.

This week’s blog breaks down the basic reports every business owner should understand, without making it weird or overly complicated.

Checking your bank account is not a real business strategy. Here are the basic financial reports every owner should understand, what they tell you, and how they help you make better decisions.
