🧭 When Should You Take Social Security?

When considering when to take Social Security, it’s easy to focus on the numbers.

But there’s another important part of the conversation: health and longevity. ❤️

Delaying Social Security generally results in a higher monthly benefit, but that doesn’t necessarily mean waiting as long as possible is the appropriate choice for everyone.

Your health, family longevity, income needs, retirement resources, and personal circumstances may all be factors worth considering when evaluating your options.

That’s one reason Social Security can be an important part of a broader retirement planning conversation.

Through our Questpoint FORMula™, we consider multiple areas of retirement planning, including Wealth Management, Risk Management, Tax Efficient Planning, Legacy Planning, Cash Management, Medicare, and Value-Added Services.

📌 Social Security is one piece of the puzzle.

Instead of simply asking, “When can I take Social Security?” it may be worth asking:

“How could the timing of Social Security fit into my overall retirement income strategy?”

Taking the time to evaluate the different considerations may help you make a decision that is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

📊 When Should You Take Social Security?

One of the most common questions I hear is: “When should I take Social Security?”

The answer? It depends. 🤔

Taking Social Security isn’t just about eligibility. The timing of your benefits may also be worth considering in relation to your income, retirement goals, and broader financial picture.

For someone with a higher level of income, for example, delaying benefits may be worth considering depending on their individual circumstances and long-term goals.

There are also tools and software programs that can help illustrate different Social Security claiming strategies. But the numbers are just one part of the conversation.

At Cornerstone Financial Group, Social Security can be considered as part of our Questpoint FORMula™, which looks at multiple areas of a retirement plan and how they may work together, including:
💰 Wealth Management
📋 Tax Efficient Planning
💵 Cash Management
🏥 Medicare
Rather than looking at Social Security as a decision on its own, it may be helpful to consider how different claiming options could fit within your overall retirement strategy.

Every situation is different, and there may not be one claiming age that is appropriate for everyone. That is the time to speak with an advisor, (530) 672-1703

🏈🖤💛 Even financial advisors need to take some time to enjoy the things they love!

Craig and his wife recently headed to a Steelers game for some quality time, football, and fun. 🏟️🏈🙌

It’s also a great reminder of why Craig is so passionate about helping clients plan for retirement. Everyone’s vision for the future can look a little different—more travel ✈️, more family time ❤️, more hobbies 🎣, or maybe more games from the stands! 🏈

Financial planning can help you explore and prepare for the possibilities that matter most to you and create a strategy designed around your individual goals and vision for the future. 📈🧭

Because a well-thought-out retirement strategy is about more than just the numbers—it’s about planning for the life you want to live. 🌟

💬 Have you ever wished your adult children had someone to talk to about their financial questions?

Maybe they’re wondering:
💰 How much should I be saving for retirement?
📋 What should I do with my old 401(k)?
📈 When should I start thinking about investing?
🏡 How do I balance saving for today with planning for tomorrow?
🎯 What financial decisions should I be thinking about in my 30s, 40s, or 50s?

There isn't always one right answer—and everyone's situation is different.

If your adult children have questions they'd like to talk through, consider inviting them to connect with our team. We can start by learning more about their circumstances, goals, and priorities.

Sometimes, getting started simply means asking the right questions. 💡

One of the things I enjoy most about working in financial planning is seeing how unique every situation can be. No two retirement plans are exactly alike.

One spouse may retire before the other. One may have a pension while the other doesn't. Social Security decisions may be different for each person, and everyone's goals and priorities are unique.

That's why personalized planning matters. I've seen clients come into meetings uncertain about what retirement might look like for them. Through the planning process and conversations with their advisor, they often gain a clearer understanding of their options and how their resources may support their goals.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is helping support that process and watching clients become more informed and confident about their future.

What do you think will be the biggest factor in your retirement journey?

Medicare can feel overwhelming at first. That's why education and preparation are so important before retirement.

The 7 Pillars: The Structure Behind the Strategy ⚓

Your financial life is connected—and when one piece changes, other pieces may need to change with it.

That’s why the Questpoint FORMula© takes a big-picture approach. We bring together seven foundational pillars to help coordinate the many moving parts of your financial life:

⚓ Wealth Management – Investment and income strategies designed around your long-term goals.

⚓ Risk Management – Identifying potential risks and exploring strategies that may help protect your plan, income, and family.

⚓ Tax Planning – Incorporating tax awareness into financial decisions to help improve long-term efficiency.

⚓ Legacy Planning – Preparing for the intentional transfer of wealth to the people and causes that matter most.

⚓ Cash Management – Coordinating income, expenses, and liquidity so your financial life can function smoothly.

⚓ Medicare – Understanding Medicare options and considering how healthcare costs may affect your retirement plan.

⚓ Value-Added Services – Additional planning resources and support designed to help simplify financial decisions.

Because your life doesn’t stand still, your financial plan shouldn’t either. The goal is to look at the whole picture, revisit the moving parts, and help keep your financial journey on course.

Plan first. Invest second.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Financial planning doesn't have to be a conversation that stops with one generation.

As your family grows and your adult children begin navigating their own careers, retirement savings, investments, insurance, and other financial decisions, it can be helpful for them to have a place to ask questions and explore their options. 💭

At Cornerstone Financial Group, we welcome the opportunity to get to know the next generation of your family and learn about what's important to them. 🤝

Whether they're just getting started or already have a financial plan in place, the first step can simply be a conversation. ☕

If you've been meaning to introduce us to your adult children, this might be a great time to make the introduction. 📩
