Taxpayers…please make sure when you are getting an estimate that it’s an actual estimate. I’ve been seeing so many taxpayers come to offices thinking they getting an estimate and they taxes ended up filed! If you don’t sign anything they don’t have permission to file your taxes especially if you haven’t signed the 8879.

Education Moment:

Key Details about Form 8879
Purpose: The form verifies that the taxpayer has reviewed the completed tax return, confirmed its accuracy, and granted permission for the ERO to use a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to sign and transmit it electronically.

No Direct Submission to IRS: The taxpayer does not send Form 8879 to the IRS. The ERO is required to retain the completed and signed form for their records for at least three years and must present it to the IRS only if requested during an audit or inquiry.

Taxpayer Responsibilities: Before signing the form, the taxpayer must:
Verify the accuracy of the entire return, including direct deposit information.
Select or verify a five-digit PIN to serve as their electronic signature.
Sign and date the form, using a handwritten or electronic signature.
Return the signed form to the ERO before the return can be transmitted.
