Is it possible to hold onto your wealth for too long?

For a long time we’ve been taught that “legacy” is something that happens after you’re gone.

You work hard, save diligently for as long as you can, create an estate plan, and eventually, it will dictate where your assets go.

That’s still solid advice, but - again, is it possible to hold on to our wealth for too long?

Yes!

If you’ve built a strong financial foundation for your own future, holding on to excess capital to pass down as an inheritance might not serve you - or your family - as well as you’d think.

Inheriting money at 65 is helpful, but getting help with tuition or funding a down payment for a first family home can change the entire trajectory of a life.

Sometimes legacy lies in our ability to help loved ones in moments when they need it most.

It’s not just in what happens after you’re gone, but what you were able to do while you lived!

As the American population continues to age, women are increasingly shouldering the responsibility of caregiving.

As of 2024, women account for 60% of all unpaid caregivers for older Americans (PBS, 2024).

Stepping into such a challenging role takes a mental, physical, and financial toll in ways most of us can’t fully appreciate.

Because of this, it's so incredibly important that women build a care team for themselves in the same way we build care teams for our loved ones - and not just friends and loved ones.

Your caregiver care team should include a financial advisor, estate planning attorney, and a therapist to help you navigate the terrain and keep you whole.

The right team of advisors understand that you’re dealing with deeply emotional decisions daily, rather than linear transactions.

Surround yourself with those who are both competent AND
compassionate.

Who’s taking care of you, caretaker?

Retirement - like everything else in a marriage - is a careful dance between partners, but to a completely new beat than what we’re used to.

Make sure to take the time to align with your spouse on a shared financial vision, so you two stay in rhythm!

One of the best things about the Summer is that we have both the time and the weather to get together with multiple generations of family and friends.

We share stories, laughs and create memories that are part of what makes life fulfilling.

With that in mind, I gently nudge all of us to start, review, or update your legacy plan.

While it may sound a bit…odd, I like to think of estate planning as planning for family continuity.

The gatherings may not be the same without you, a well-structured legacy plan ensures that the gatherings you cherish today can continue in the future.

You get to define how to support younger relatives, where key assets go, and who manages your final wishes, while keeping the family unified.

It removes ambiguity, which prevents unnecessary conflict among the people you love most.

Planning your legacy today allows your loved ones to focus on preserving and building on the foundation you’ve laid for years to come.

Traveling with family creates some of our most meaningful memories, but the logistics and costs can add up quickly.

Fortunately, the solution to offsetting those expenses can lie in the very transactions you already make every day!

Later this month I’m hosting a conversation with points specialist Hunter Threadgill and travel expert to break down how we can leverage our everyday household and business transactions to enhance or offset the cost of your next vacation.

Amy’s story resonates with me because for the most part, she did everything right.

She found a career that sustained her financially, pursued a passion that fed her soul, and maintained relationships with close friends.

Amy’s story is much like most of ours.

What we miss is planning for what we want our retirement days to look like, often until we’re in the thick of the decision.

Suddenly we find ourselves trying to decide what the next 20 years looks like in just a few months.

As more of us decide to age independently, it’s so important that we plan early and often with our financial advisors and other professionals.
That way, we’re never stuck planning alone.

Recently I spent the weekend cheering on my husband at the Maryland Ping Pong Senior Olympics.

He and his doubles partner officially qualified for the national tournament next year!

Last month marked twenty two years since our church wedding and twenty-four (!!) years since our courthouse ceremony.

We have navigated sickness, health, and the daily adventure of raising two kids who love to keep us humble (and are alarmingly good at it).

Moments like this help keep me sane in the chaos that comes with building two advisory practices.

I’m incredibly proud of my husband, and even prouder of us. To many more years of victories.

Recently, I met with one of my youngest clients. She’s the daughter of two of my long-time clients, and she’s in her early 30s.

Over the years, I’ve watched her navigate through what's become such an incredibly challenging job market for young people.

Life’s thrown her curveballs in the form of income cuts and career setbacks.

Yet through it all, she found a way to consistently save cash reserves, and diligently put away for retirement.

She was in our meeting, actively looking for ways to continue to refine her plan to maximize her retirement.

I couldn’t help but tell her how proud I was of how disciplined she has been over the years, and as we reviewed her plan, I reminded her that she’s allowed to have fun as well.

Financial plans aren’t meant to always be so restrictive that we forget to live.

I’m a proud financial advisor/money aunt today.

Here’s a reminder to encourage our young folks making their way. They need to hear it from us!

One of the greatest assets in a wealth management advisor is experience navigating through volatile markets.

Over the last 25 years, I’ve been blessed to successfully steer clients through some major economic corrections.

Tomorrow, I’m hosting a mid-year market update with my colleague Malcolm Polley, who has a wealth of experience (pun intended!) tracking and analyzing markets.

You’ll hear:

Our thoughts on the factors most directly impacting the market to date.

Our approach to risk management and long-term positioning
Strategies to help families preserve their financial foundation.

And more! Bring your questions and some notes. We’re looking forward to a fantastic session with you.
