One of the things I enjoy most about tax advisory is helping clients slow down before making important tax decisions.

It's easy to hear about a strategy that's saving someone else money and assume it will produce the same result for your business. In reality, every business has a different ownership structure, income profile, and long-term objective. A strategy that works well in one situation may create very little value in another.

That's why I rarely start with the strategy itself.

I start by understanding the business, how it operates, where the owners want to go, and how the different pieces fit together. Once we have that clarity, we can determine which planning opportunities make sense and how they should be implemented.

If you've been wondering whether your current tax strategy is keeping pace with your business, I'd be happy to have a conversation.

A complimentary consultation is an opportunity to discuss your goals, ask questions, and explore whether a more proactive approach could help you make better-informed decisions moving forward.

Choosing a tax election is rarely the final step.

Strategies such as PTET require coordination with estimated tax payments, owner distributions, and the rest of your tax planning.

Without that broader perspective, even a beneficial election may not deliver the outcome you expected.

PTET has become one of the most talked-about tax elections for California business owners.

The election itself is only one part of the process.

The real question is whether it fits your business, your ownership structure, and your long-term planning objectives.

That is where thoughtful tax strategy makes the difference.

Many California business owners are paying more federal tax because of the SALT deduction limitation.

The PTET election was introduced as one way to improve tax efficiency, but it only creates value when it fits the business’s broader tax strategy.

Understanding whether it applies to your situation is the important first step.

If you own a business in California, you have probably heard about the PTET election.

For some business owners, it can be an effective way to improve tax efficiency and reduce the impact of the SALT deduction cap.

The important question is not whether PTET exists. It is whether it makes sense for your business and your overall tax strategy.

We explain more in the article below.

Learn how California’s Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) election can help business owners improve tax efficiency and reduce the impact of the SALT deduction cap.

Many tax strategies are straightforward in concept.

What tends to make the difference is whether the structure is documented properly, followed consistently, and aligned with the broader business setup.

Without that coordination, the intended benefit may never fully materialize.

An accountable plan is one of the more overlooked tax structures for business owners.

When implemented properly, it can improve how expenses are handled while creating a cleaner reimbursement process.

The challenge is that many businesses either do not have a formal structure in place or are not maintaining it consistently over time.

Business owners often cover expenses personally throughout the year without reviewing how those costs are being treated for tax purposes.

Over time, that can lead to missed deductions or less efficient outcomes than necessary.

Sometimes the issue is not the expense itself, but the structure behind how it is handled.

Many business owners pay for business expenses personally throughout the year without realizing those expenses may not be receiving the most efficient tax treatment.

Travel, vehicle use, home office expenses, and similar costs are often handled informally or inconsistently.

An accountable plan creates a formal structure for reimbursing legitimate business expenses without treating those reimbursements as taxable income.
The concept itself is relatively simple. The value comes from proper implementation and ongoing consistency.

We break this down further in the article below.

Learn how accountable plans can help business owners improve the tax treatment of business expenses and reduce unnecessary tax exposure.

A large part of my work is helping clients step back and look at their tax situation more strategically.

For many business owners and high-income individuals, the issue is not a lack of effort. It is that most tax decisions are being made reactively or in isolation, without enough coordination across the bigger financial picture.

My approach is centered around understanding how all of the moving parts work together. Income, business structure, investments, timing, and long-term goals all influence the outcome.

I believe good tax advisory should create clarity, not complexity. Clients should understand what is being done, why it matters, and how it fits into their broader objectives over time.

If you have been wondering whether your current approach is as proactive as it could be, you are welcome to book a complimentary consultation to explore whether working together would make sense. 📲 https://molincpa.com/contact/

These conversations are designed to give you perspective on your current structure, identify areas that may deserve closer attention, and help you better understand what a more coordinated approach could look like.
