A seed research company in New Zealand recently retrofitted their drill with our Acra Openers to meet the growing demand for direct seeding in no-till conditions. Small grain researchers all over the world are stepping up their games towards more sustainable and climate friendly grain plot practices. ShieldAg offers our Acra Drill direct seeding openers to help innovators in agriculture tackle those challenges. We’re proud to help innovators in agriculture tackle unique challenges with our reliable solutions.

Over the past decade, ShieldAg/Acra Plant has introduced over a dozen new features tailored to the needs of plot researchers. As we continue to innovate, our next frontier is integrating AI capabilities into plot seeders—a project currently underway in collaboration with Kansas State University Researchers.

Yesterday, we delivered one of our advanced Acra-Drill Units (ADU) to Kansas State University as part of the GRIPex grant led by Ajay Sharda in the K-State Biological & Agricultural Engineering. Their research, “Mapping Seed-to-Plant Life Cycle to Predict Yields,” will benefit from the precision and reliability of our ADU, which ensures optimal seed placement and soil contact — crucial for accurate crop research.

Our Story

Shield Agricultural Equipment has its 74-year-old roots in Hutchinson, Kansas, when Herman Kopper founded Welders Supply Co. in 1938. In the early 1950’s, the name changed to Kopper Supply as the focus of the business adapted to agricultural tillage tool manufacturing and distribution. Phil Stump joined the firm in 1960 as the business expanded to include the manufacture of a wider variety of agricultural tools. In 1968, the business moved into the current facility in South Hutchinson. 1977 saw an expansion into fertilizer application tools, requiring the business to build its own heat treat facility. In the early 1980’s, the business changed hands and name to Shield Industries. 1998 brought the addition of Acra-Plant with the purchase of this Garden Citybased company, allowing Shield to expand into modern No-Till and Min-Till practices. In 2002, we adopted the Dba--Shield Agricultural Equipment to express our focus on modern agriculture. In 2008, Shield purchased the rights to ABM Manufacturing to expand our market in sorghum (milo) harvesting aids for combines. With over 2,000 distributors and dealers across the United States and 6 foreign countries, ShieldAG designs, manufactures and distributes a full line of tillage tools and hardware, including: • Stubble-mulch blades, also known in the various Midwest high plains regions as Vblades, Nobel blades, sweep blades or undercutter blades • Chisels & spikes, ripper, subsoiler and cultivator points • 26" conservation sweeps ("fallowmaster", "fallow king"), row crop, field cultivator, chisel plow and penetrator sweeps • Disc blades, coulter blades, planter and grain drill discs and assemblies • Chrome carbide heavy-duty deep tillage and subsoiler points • Fertilizer application gear, including fertilizer and strip till knives, shanks and clamps • Acra-Plant No-Till and Min-Till planting, drilling and conservation tools • Original AMB Milo Guards and Crop Savers • ShieldAg Conveyors; belted high-capacity mobile grain conveyors Shield Agricultural Equipment’s Involvement in the Community: • Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce Member • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County Corporate Sponsor • Member of Advanced Manufacturing Institute Advisory Board - KSU – AMI • Member of Equus Beds Groundwater Management District # 2 • 40 Employees with a $1.1 million payroll and 100% Local Ownership
