Alert: There's a new tax-related scam
According to the April 2014 Newsletter, "The General Ledger" the scam takes many forms but has common elements. Crooks call individuals and businesses claiming that they are with the IRS, using fake badge numbers and common surnames. Usually they say the individual or business owes taxes and will be arrested if payment is not received immediately. They sometimes threaten revocation of a driver's license. The initial phone call usually is promptly followed by a call from someone claiming to be from the local police or CMV and repeating what the first caller said. Sometimes the callers seek information to enable them to steal the individual's or business's ID. Other times they demand immediate payment through a wire transfer or prepaid debt card.
Key point: If the IRS believes your firm or you owe money, you will receive a bill or other communication through regular mail---not a telephone call or e-mail. You can verify the amount owed by calling the IRS at 800-829-1040. The IRS requests that if you are targeted by such a scam you call the Treasury Department at 800-366-4484 and contact the Federal Trade Commission at www.FTC.gov . Use the FTC Complaint Assistant and put "IRS Telephone Scam" in your comments. [IR-2014-16]
