I tried. I really did.

Cleared off the truck, threw it in 4WD, and headed to the office like a determined New Englander.

But... the office parking lot hasn't been plowed yet - and it's still snowing. As much as I'd love to be siting in my office, looking out the window at the spender of winter, I made the executive decision to turn around and come back home.

I'm choosing to see this as the universe's way of saying: "Ruth, it's time to work on the business, not just in it."

So today's agenda includes:

* Updating the website for RES Consulting & Tax Services LLC
* Fine-tuning the referral program
* Tackling some of that business planning I've been putting off
* And maybe... just maybe... getting a little housework done.

Stay safe and warm out there. And if you can, take a minute to reminisce about your youth - when snow days meant cocoa, sledding, and absolutely zero responsibilities.

Welllll Southington… here we go.

I had a client in my office today who happens to be meteorologist (because of course I did), and his forecast for downtown Southington is 12–16 inches of heavy snow through late Monday. This isn’t a dusting. This is heavy, “cancel your plans and find the good shovel,” snow.

So after some deep thought — and realizing my clients prefer smaller tax payments over bigger snowbanks — RES Consulting & Tax Services LLC willl be closed throughout the snowfall. I'll reopen the office on Tuesday.

My weather forecasting client shared his graphics, with more scientific accuracy than the groundhog… yet somehow, same dramatic outcome.

Now don’t worry about me — I’ll be fine. I’m that rare Connecticut resident who genuinely loves a good snowstorm. I'll be happily watching the snow pile up out there while working through client tax forms, answering emails, and dreaming of making snow angels!

Clients, family & friends... I handle the tax stress while Mother Nature makes the winter wonderland.

So stay safe. Stay warm. And please don't throw your back out with the shoveling! I'll need you upright for your tax appointment!

In case you missed it... New this tax season!

The IRS will no longer send paper checks. Direct Deposit is the way to go, and gets your refund to you much faster!

If you have a balance due, the IRS offers ways to do this electronically, as well. This process reduces late fees and penalties for many!

Ask your tax preparer about your options!

Paper checks were neato, but now we have a faster way to get you your refund. Direct deposit is the bees’ knees. You can get your refund in 21 days or less. If you need to make a payment, our electronic payment options are nifty. Paying electronically is like greased lightening and helps you avoid penalties and interest.

Reminder to all Southington businesses, and other businesses throughout the state of Connecticut.

Personal Property Declarations must be filed by Monday, November 3rd, 2025.

It is super important you fill out the form as accurately as possible, and get it in on time. The penalty for late filing, or not filing, is high!

The scammers are at it again, or should we say still... Please be extra careful about any mail you might receive, and confirm it is legitimate before responding!

As for emails... the IRS is not going to email you about a potential audit! Never click the links within!

If you receive something you are unsure of, check with the IRS directly, or check with a local tax professional. We are want each of you to be safe!

Watch out for a scam email that may read, ‘Notification of IRS Audit & Investigation.’ The email may direct you to download a “secure” file (in some cases via sites like Cognito Forms) and submit documentation, but in fact the link leads to a fraudulent site that may steal your data or install malware. It is back-to-school time for the kids, and for our educators! Did you know eligible educators can deduct up to $300 ($600 if filing MFJ, allowing $300 per eligible educator.) This deduction is for qualified expenses, and is often overlooked!
