The IRS is up to their armpits in alligators! They are sending out CP14 and CP22A notices saying you need to pay a balance due on your 2021 taxes. A number or my clients have received one of these notices and so far all of them paid. You must respond either by phone or mail (certified) if you received one of these letters. I predict about 5 million letters went out (plus or minus a million). Problem: The IRS deposits your check but does not get your account credited. The IRS is required to send these deficiency letters within 60 days of obligation posting.

Ready, Set, Go: The IRS will begin accepting e-filed returns on January 27, 2020. You can file earlier using free software, or a paid preparer but the are held until the 27th. Happy 2020 filing season!

The IRS just annouced two days ago that they would begin receiving e-filed returns January 28th. They will also begin processing refunds beginning at that time. I know a lot of information out there has not been updated but this is directly from the IRS. The IRS funding resolution passed by the House is DOA in the Senate but does not effect refunds.

IRS announced increased mileage rate for 2018. Up 1cent from 2017 for business miles, medical and moving expenses. New tax plan for better or worse looks likely. Major changes for 2018.

New from my association meeting yesterday (Washington Association of Accountants). The IRS is now reporting to the taxpayers whose identity has been used to file a fraudulent tax return the, name, address, and social security number of the person responsible. They are doing this so the victim/taxpayer can take legal action themselves.

IRS website and database breach: this has affected approximately 100,000 taxpayers. You have no need to be concerned unless you used the IRS web portal to request transcripts of your prior years returns.

Every year I get calls from concerned taxpayers who get scam calls alleging they are with the IRS. The IRS will never:
1.Call to demand immediate payment, nor will we call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
2.Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
3.Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
4.Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
5.Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
