Why are refunds taking so long?
Tax refunds in early 2026 are delayed due to a combination of factors: a later-than-usual tax season start following a 2025 government shutdown, residual processing backlogs, reduced IRS staffing, and a major transition away from paper checks. While most taxpayers with e-file and direct deposit should see funds within 21 days, many may experience delays of 4-9 weeks, particularly for paper returns or those claiming certain tax credits.
