A new school year is a pretty good reminder of just how quickly life moves.

The child you were saving for is suddenly in high school. College isn’t quite as far away as it used to be. Your income may have changed. Your accounts have grown. Your insurance needs may be different. And those beneficiary forms you filled out years ago may not have crossed your mind since.

Financial planning isn’t something you finish.

As your family changes, your plan should change with it.

Back-to-school season might be a good time to take a look at yours.

Ten years from retirement can sound like plenty of time.

From a planning perspective, it can also be one of the most important stretches of your financial life.

You’re close enough to begin putting real numbers around retirement, but you may still have years of peak earnings, retirement-plan contributions and strategic decisions ahead of you.

This is the time to start getting specific.

What will retirement actually cost? Where will your income come from? When might you claim Social Security? How are taxes likely to affect withdrawals? Is your investment strategy still appropriate for the timeline ahead?

Retirement planning becomes much more useful when “someday” starts becoming an actual date.

Interest rates are making headlines again.

Recent inflation data showed prices continuing to rise faster than the Federal Reserve would like, and Fed officials are signaling that another rate increase could be on the table.

But interest rates aren’t just a mortgage story.

They can influence borrowing costs, cash and fixed-income strategies, business decisions, investment markets and the assumptions built into a long-term financial plan.

The important question isn’t simply, “Will rates go up?”

It’s whether your financial strategy is prepared for either direction.

Investing involves risk. Consult your financial professional regarding your individual circumstances.

You work for your money. Eventually, you want some of your money working for you.

That doesn’t mean chasing the hottest investment or trying to outsmart the market.

It means being intentional about what you’re saving, where you’re putting it, how much risk you’re taking, and what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

Because accumulating money isn’t really the goal.

Giving your money a job is.

Retirement gets most of the attention. But there’s a lot of life between now and then.

Buying a home. Raising kids. Changing careers. Paying for college. Caring for parents. Starting a business. Protecting your family. And, yes, enjoying some of the money you’ve worked hard to earn.

A financial plan should help you make decisions now, not just prepare you for someday.

Peace of mind isn’t knowing exactly what the future will look like.

It’s knowing you’ve thought about it.

What happens if an income changes? If there’s a major expense? If retirement comes earlier than expected? If life simply doesn’t follow the plan?

Good financial planning isn’t about predicting every possibility. It’s about being better prepared for the possibilities you can’t predict.

Most of us are pretty good at taking care of what needs our attention today.

The mortgage. The groceries. The kids. The car. The unexpected expense that somehow shows up right on schedule.

The harder part is making room for someone who isn’t asking for anything yet: you, 10, 20 or 30 years from now.

You don’t have to sacrifice today for tomorrow. But tomorrow deserves a place in the plan.
