Were you excited to book that warm spring break trip back in January, only to find yourself feeling a little uneasy as it draws nearer? We know it's hard not to feel nervous about your finances as a big trip draws near.

But we promise it's possible to enjoy your vacation and still make good choices regarding your bank account.

• Pack light, but pack well: Avoid overpacking so you can avoid paying additional luggage fees, but make sure you've packed all of your essentials to avoid having to purchase them when out and about.
• Create a budget before you go: Having at least a loose plan for a budget will help you stay on track while on vacation.
• Look for free things to do: Or search Groupon or other coupons for local activities.
• Balance eating out with eating in: If you can cook in your hotel or airbnb, or even buy snacks you can eat on the go, you'll save a lot of money. Plus, it's fun!
• Avoid credit cards: If possible, we recommend leaving the credit card at home. With cash, a debit card, or a pre-paid visa, you'll ensure you have a set limit.

In each post, we summarize a piece of the SECURE (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement) 2.0 Act.

Catch Up Contributions Improving for Company-Sponsored Retirement Plans -

Current law states that you can contribute an extra $7,500 / yr to your company retirement plan ($3,500 / yr to a SIMPLE IRA) if you are age 50 or older. The SECURE 2.0 Act increases this amount and allows you to choose whichever option is greater: either $10,000 or 150% of the regular catch-up limit (this means you can choose either $5,000 or 150% of the regular catch up limit for SIMPLE IRAs) in 2025 for those aged 60 to 63.

Many people choose a 15-year mortgage so they can be mortgage-free sooner. Not only will their loan be paid off earlier, but they will likely save thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest.

We know this can sound appealing, but it's important to remember that saving on interest is not the same as making money. A 30-year mortgage will allow you to have a much lower payment than a 15-year mortgage and the money you save could be invested! However, if you’re not going to invest the savings, then a 15-year mortgage might be the right choice for you.

Your annual summer vacation will be here before you know it. Ensure you can enjoy your trip without having to check your bank account before every purchase with the tips below:

• Research: Look for the best deals on hotels, flights, car rentals, and activities. Keep an eye out for coupons.
• Visit the mechanic: If you plan on taking your car, get it checked out to make sure it won't break and cost you more money on the trip
• Start saving now: Set aside money for the next several months (cash in envelopes, a specific savings account, etc.), so you have more money to spend when your trip rolls around. Encourage family members to do the same so they have more to spend on personal souvenirs, too!
• Shop around for a place to stay: Airbnb? VRBO? Camping? Hotel? A combination of them all? The possibilities are endless! Do what works for your trip and budget.
• Be flexible with travel dates if possible: Does your flight or accommodation cost less on certain days of the week? Choose those if you can!
• Pack well: Make a list and check it twice. Avoid making last-minute and often costly purchases for items you've forgotten by not forgetting them.

Whether you've read about it already or this is your first time hearing about it, our goal is to make it a little bit more digestible for you. That's why we've created the SECURE Act series. With each post in this series, we will break down a different piece of the act.

Company Retirement Plan Auto Enrollment: Beginning in 2025, employers will be required to add a provision to new company-sponsored retirement plans (think 401ks) that automatically enroll new employees.
