Mileage update! 📣
The IRS just announced a mid-year mileage rate increase. Starting July 1, the standard reimbursement rate is $0.76 per mile, up from $0.725 for the first half of the year.

If your nanny, caregiver, or household employee drives as part of their job, this is the rate you can use to reimburse them tax-free. Think: picking up kids from school, running household errands, transporting a senior to appointments.

Reimbursing at the right rate protects both of you. It keeps your employee whole, and it keeps you compliant.

Questions about how to handle mileage in your household payroll? We've got you. 👇

Here's a court case every household employer should read.

A judge in Florida just ruled that a homeowner's girlfriend could be personally on the hook for unpaid wages, because she was the one managing the housekeeper's schedule and assigning her work. Not the homeowner. His girlfriend. Even though she never signed a paycheck.

The same court also sided against the family on overtime, saying they can't avoid double damages because they never showed they made a good faith effort to follow the rules.

The takeaway: being "the employer" isn't about whose name is on the house or the checkbook. It's about who's actually in charge day to day. If that's you, or your partner, or anyone directing the work in your home, the wage and overtime laws already apply to you.

Worth noting, the homeowner is still very much part of this case. The court already confirmed he's an employer, that part is settled. What's still being decided is whether his girlfriend is ALSO an employer, on top of him, plus the overtime hours themselves. This case is far from over. Cases like this can drag on for years before anyone knows the final outcome.

Don't learn this the hard way. We help families understand exactly who's on the hook and what the rules require, before it becomes a legal problem.
