🔎Behind the Scenes/Workflow Spotlight
Building the Backbone Before the Busy Years
This is my first year preparing taxes professionally, and even with a light client load, I’ve been treating this season as the foundation for every year that comes after it. A big part of my workflow right now is strengthening the systems that keep everything accurate and secure long before things get busy.
This week’s focus was refining my internal process: tightening my documentation templates, reviewing my due‑diligence checklists, and making sure my software settings and security tools are exactly where they need to be. It’s quiet work, but it’s the kind of groundwork that makes future seasons smoother, safer, and more predictable.
Even in a slow year, these steady behind‑the‑scenes habits are how I build a practice that’s reliable, not just for clients, but for myself as a professional.

Tax season comes with enough stress on its own, so this week’s Dollars with Dev focuses on one of the most common (and most confusing) moments: IRS refund adjustments.

Most adjustments are routine, but they can feel alarming if you don’t know what triggered them. I walk through the most common reasons, what’s normal, and when it’s worth reaching out.

Full post here:

Most people expect their refund to match the number on their tax return exactly, but the IRS sometimes makes small adjustments before releasing it. This can feel alarming if you’re not expecting it, so let’s walk through the most common reasons this happens—and when it’s completely normal.

📚 Client Education / FAQ
What Happens After Your Tax Return Is Filed
One of the most common questions I get during tax season is:
“What actually happens after my return is submitted?”

1. The IRS receives your return
They timestamp it and place it in a queue.
Confirmation that it arrived.

2. Your identity and basic information are verified
This is where they check your name, SSN, address, and filing status.
If anything doesn’t match their records, they pause the return.

3. They match your forms
The IRS compares your return to the W‑2s, 1099s, and other forms sent in by employers and banks.
This is why accuracy matters. Mismatches cause delays.

4. They calculate your refund or balance
Once everything lines up, the IRS finalizes your return and schedules your refund (or balance due).

5. You wait
Most refunds arrive within 21 days, but timing can vary.
If the IRS needs anything from you, I’ll reach out directly.
Otherwise, no news is good news.

A little clarity goes a long way during tax season.
If you ever feel unsure about where your return is in the process, just ask. I’m here to keep things calm and clear.

🔎Behind the Scenes/Workflow Spotlight
My Weekly Training Ritual
One of the quiet ways I keep my work accurate and steady is a simple habit I do every week:
I give myself a short training session.

Nothing intense.
Nothing overwhelming.
Just a calm, intentional check‑in with my skills.

It’s one of the ways I stay sharp for my clients and keep my workflow predictable, even during busy seasons.

Here’s what that looks like behind the scenes:

• A gentle review, not a grind
I pick one small topic — a form I don’t see often, a credit I want to stay confident with, or a scenario I want to practice.
It’s usually 10–20 minutes. Just enough to stay warm.

• A quick scenario or mini‑lesson
Sometimes I walk through a practice return.
Sometimes I reread IRS guidance on a specific credit.
Sometimes I review my own notes from past seasons.

It’s never about perfection — it’s about staying familiar and steady.

• Why I do this
Because accuracy isn’t an accident.
It’s a practice.

This tiny weekly habit helps me:

catch mistakes faster

stay calm in unusual situations

keep my knowledge fresh

support clients with clarity

avoid “seasonal rust”

It’s one of the quiet ways I protect the quality of my work.

• A small habit with a big impact
I don’t wait for tax season to teach me something the hard way.
I stay ahead of it — gently, consistently, and without pressure.

It’s a simple rhythm, but it makes everything else smoother.

It's nearly Mid‑March!
If you’ve been meaning to start your return, this week’s "Dollars with Dev" breaks down what actually matters in mid‑March and how to make the rest of the season easier on yourself.

I also added a gentle reminder about the $15 March Momentum Discount for anyone who uploads their documents within 48 hours of starting their return.
