Selling online? One tax rule just became less complicated — but there’s an important catch.

If you sell through online marketplaces or accept business payments through third-party payment apps, you have probably heard a lot about Form 1099-K.

The rules have changed again.

Under current federal law, third-party settlement organizations generally are required to issue Form 1099-K when payments for goods or services exceed **$20,000 AND 200 transactions** during the year.

That is good news for many smaller sellers.

But here is the part I don't want business owners to misunderstand:

No 1099-K does not mean no taxable income.

If you earned $8,000 selling products online, that income doesn't suddenly disappear from your tax return just because the platform didn't send you a tax form.

Your own bookkeeping still matters more than the form.

If you sell online, this is a good time to make sure your sales records, fees, refunds, shipping costs and business expenses are being tracked separately.

I'm curious — if you sell online, do you keep your own accounting records throughout the year, or do you mostly rely on the reports you receive from the platform?

A Friendly Tax Deadline Reminder

Summer has a way of flying by... and before we know it, extension deadlines will be here.

Here are the two important dates to keep in mind:

✅ September 15 – Extended deadline for most business tax returns (Partnerships and S Corporations)

✅ October 15 – Extended deadline for most individual income tax returns

If you're still waiting on documents or have questions about your return, now is a great time to get everything together. The closer we get to the deadlines, the busier things become.

Life changes. Your taxes change too.

Some of the biggest tax surprises don't happen because Congress changed the law.
They happen because life happened.

These moments bring enough emotions on their own. Unfortunately, they can also change your tax return in ways many people don't expect.
A major life event may affect:
✔️ Your filing status
✔️ Your tax withholding
✔️ Who can claim a child as a dependent
✔️ Tax credits you may qualify for
✔️ What information needs to be updated with the Social Security Administration, your employer, or the Internal Revenue Service.
One of the most common things I hear is:

"I'll deal with it when I file my taxes next year."

Sometimes that's fine.
Sometimes waiting can mean the wrong amount of tax is withheld from your paycheck, missed tax benefits, or extra paperwork later.
The good news? Most of these issues are easy to fix when they're handled early.
If you've had a major life change this year and you're wondering whether it affects your taxes, ask the question now—not next spring.
Sometimes a five-minute conversation today can prevent a much bigger headache later.
