Book Corner: this month I'm recommending Profit First by Mike Michalowicz. If you've ever looked at your bank account and wondered where the profit went, this book flips the traditional accounting formula (Sales minus Expenses equals Profit) on its head to Sales minus Profit equals Expenses. It's a simple mindset shift that's helped so many of the business owners I work with actually keep more of what they earn. Tax law updates you'll actually want to ask your accountant about. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) brought permanent changes that took effect for 2026 and are already shaping how business owners plan: • 100% bonus depreciation is back — write off qualifying equipment purchases the year you buy them • Section 179 expensing limits are higher, so more equipment and software purchases can be deducted immediately • The 20% Qualified Business Income deduction is now permanent for S-corps, partnerships, and sole proprietors • The 21% flat corporate tax rate is permanent too If you've been putting off a big equipment purchase, 2026 might be the year — but every business is different. Mark your calendars! South Carolina's Tax Free Weekend runs Friday, Aug 7 through Sunday, Aug 9. For 72 hours, clothing, shoes, school supplies, and computers are exempt from the state's 6% sales tax (plus local tax) — in store and online. Quick tip for my business owners: if you're stocking your home office with a computer or supplies for personal use, this weekend is the time to buy. Just remember — items purchased for business use don't qualify for the exemption, so keep personal and business purchases separate in your records. Tag a parent who needs this reminder!
