Recently contributed to a Wall Street Journal article discussing the growing number of ways investors can gain exposure to private companies before an IPO.

One thing I’m seeing more often is that the excitement around the company can sometimes overshadow the structure of the investment itself.

With many of these vehicles, understanding what you actually own, the liquidity, the fees, and the tax considerations can matter just as much as the company name attached to it.

I appreciated the opportunity to contribute to Hannah Erin Lang’s piece on the topic.

We were recently quoted in a CNBC article discussing stagflation and what it could mean for investors.

While terms like this can resurface during periods of uncertainty, the focus in our client conversations remains consistent: making sure portfolios, cash reserves, and spending plans are structured to navigate a range of economic environments.

In practice, that often comes down to maintaining diversification, holding appropriate liquidity for near-term needs, and avoiding the need to make reactive decisions during periods of market stress.

Conflict in Iran has sent oil prices up, prompting some experts to worry that a worst-case scenario called stagflation could be possible for the U.S. economy.

Retirement planning for 2026 is less about reacting to headlines and more about revisiting assumptions – especially around taxes, income sources, and portfolio structure.

Investor’s Business Daily examined planning considerations for the year ahead, including tax changes, income coordination, and portfolio adjustments for retirees and near-retirees. Tom Geoghegan of Beacon Hill Private Wealth commented on the importance of revisiting assumptions early and aligning investment and tax decisions as circumstances evolve.

📘 College Costs and Market Volatility: What 529 Investors Need to Know - As Featured in Bloomberg 📘

With stock markets under pressure, many families funding college through 529 plans are feeling the pinch.

Bloomberg’s latest piece includes perspective from Tomas Geoghegan, CFP®, CIMA®, CPWA®, RMA®, founder of Beacon Hill Private Wealth, on how parents can stay focused - or even find opportunity - depending on where they are in the college savings journey.

"While parents with kids who are close to attending school should focus on preserving capital, those with younger students could use the current moment to increase their 529 contributions," says Geoghegan. "These families can benefit from lower valuations, dollar-cost averaging, and the compounding effect of time."

🔹 What matters most in today’s environment?
✔ Align your risk with the age of your child
✔ Preserve capital near tuition dates
✔ Consider increasing contributions when markets dip (for long-term savers)

A thoughtful glide path - not guesswork - is key to protecting and growing education savings.

📉 The Risk Retirees Can’t Afford to Ignore—As Featured in Bloomberg 📉

With the S&P 500 down over 9% and market volatility on the rise, retirees face an often-overlooked danger: sequence of return risk.

“Early losses while withdrawing funds can severely impact a portfolio’s longevity,” says Tomas Geoghegan, founder of Beacon Hill Private Wealth, in a recent Bloomberg feature. “It’s one of the biggest but most underappreciated risks in retirement.”

Many retirees hesitate to diversify due to capital gains taxes, planning to de-risk gradually. But markets don’t wait for tax efficiency—a sudden correction can wipe out more value than the taxes they were trying to avoid.

🔹 What can retirees do?
✔ Hold shorter-term safe assets (like U.S. Treasuries) to cover near-term expenses.
✔ Avoid selling equities in a downturn, preserving long-term assets for recovery.
✔ Structure a balanced, risk-aware portfolio that supports financial security.

At Beacon Hill Private Wealth, we help investors navigate uncertainty with confidence. If you're concerned about portfolio risk in today’s markets, let’s talk.
