Our team of advisors had a great time at Hard Rock Stadium last weekend, spending the afternoon with guests at the members lounge and enjoying some great football along the way.

Thank you to the Miami Dolphins for having us. This partnership has been a pleasure from day one, and we look forward to many more game days together.

Yes, the loss is real.

No, that doesn't necessarily mean you can deduct all of it today.

Passive activity losses can sit suspended on a return until the tax rules allow you to use them.

That's why I want to know the tax history of an investment when we're talking about an eventual exit.

There may be suspended losses you've been carrying forward for years.

Two families can each be worth $30 million and have very little in common from an estate planning perspective.

If $25 million is sitting inside a privately held business, I have a very different set of questions than I do when the wealth is spread across securities, real estate and cash.

The $30 million gets my attention.

What sits underneath it is where the planning starts.

100% bonus depreciation can create a significant first-year deduction on qualifying property.

That doesn't mean you should spend $2 million just to get it.

Would you buy the equipment anyway? Does the business need it? When will it actually be placed in service?

The tax benefit matters. So does the $2 million leaving your bank account

The tax code lets you write off a business car that's going up in value.

Read that again. Depreciation is supposed to compensate you for an asset wearing out. But a 1972 GTO gets the exact same write-off schedule as a 2026 Lexus, same annual caps, same treatment for new and used. One of them is worth 40 percent of sticker in five years. The other should sell for more than you paid.

The IRS hated this. It lost in court to musicians writing off 300-year-old violins, announced it would take the issue to the Supreme Court, and then spent thirty years never finding a case to bring.

President Trump proposed giving American adults a $5,000 dividend.

I understand the idea behind it. If the government creates savings or additional revenue, there is nothing wrong with asking how some of that prosperity can benefit Americans directly.

But I think there may be a better question to ask:

What if we used that $5,000 to help more Americans become owners?

A universal program could cost more than $1 trillion. At a time when the United States already carries substantial debt and long-term obligations, that deserves serious consideration.

There is also inflation. Putting that much additional spendable cash into the economy could create additional inflationary pressure, potentially affecting interest rates and borrowing costs.

So I would consider a different approach.

Target the benefit toward Americans with lower incomes and fewer financial assets.

Then, instead of providing $5,000 of immediately spendable cash, put it into a long-term, tax-advantaged investment account.

Let that money participate in the growth of American businesses. Let it compound. Let it help build retirement security.

There may even be an opportunity for private companies and philanthropists to contribute voluntarily alongside the government.

I spend a lot of time thinking about the K-shaped economy.

Americans who own businesses, stocks and other appreciating assets have benefited enormously from economic growth and rising markets.

Many Americans have participated much less.

A one-time check may help someone today.

Ownership has the potential to help someone for decades.

Maybe the bigger opportunity is not simply giving more Americans $5,000.

Maybe it is giving more Americans a meaningful stake in the prosperity of the country they live in.

This Labor Day, we celebrate the people whose dedication, skill, and perseverance keep our businesses, communities and country moving forward.

From early mornings to late nights, from behind the scenes to front and center, meaningful work takes commitment—and every contribution matters.

Today is a reminder to appreciate the people who build, serve, create, care, lead, and inspire.

May we honor not only the work people do, but also their right to dignity, opportunity, balance, and time to enjoy the lives they work so hard to build.

Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and meaningful Labor Day.
