Every year, without fail, we gather in Branchport, NY, for the 4th of July Parade Hosted by the Branchport/Keuka Park Fire Department. It’s become more than just an event—it’s a tradition. We always arrive early, securing our familiar spot along the route, saving seats for the whole family. There’s a special comfort in the routine: greeting old friends we haven’t seen in ages, catching up with neighbors, waving at passing cars and floats, and soaking in the festive energy that fills the air. The sense of togetherness, the laughter, and the shared memories make the day feel uniquely joyful—something we look forward to all year long.
This tradition reminds me a lot of payroll and the value of being part of a community. Just as showing up year after year at the parade connects us with something bigger than ourselves, being involved in payroll means being a vital part of a company’s heartbeat. It’s about consistency, reliability, and celebrating the people who make up our work family. Do we have to pay nonexempt employees when we close due to severe weather?

Answered by the HR Experts

When you close due to inclement weather, nonexempt employees (those who are entitled to overtime) need to be paid only for actual hours worked plus any reporting time pay that might be required by state law.
You have the following options when it comes to if or how you pay nonexempt employees for time they missed:

1. Pay them for the time, even though they didn’t work
2. Require they take the day off unpaid
3. Require they use any available vacation time or paid time off (PTO)
4. Allow them to choose between taking unpaid time off or using vacation or PTO

All four options have their merits. We generally recommend option 4, allowing nonexempt employees the choice of using vacation time or PTO.
