About 10 years ago my parents didn’t understand why they were losing money in their retirement portfolios… Even while the market was going straight up.
I took one look at their investment statements from their “financial advisor” and became furious.
He was charging them a 6% fee off the top to “manage” their money. And he wasn’t even picking the investments… He was a salesman.
He was also “investing” their money in funds that were charging them 2% fees. When he could have had them in funds that charged 0.1% fees.
And then on top of that, you must account for another 2% or so for taxes and inflation… At least you did then.
Meaning, how he set up their investments charged them around 10% in total fees annually.
Or as I explained to them - “This is why you’re losing money every year while the market goes up… To make a 1% return on your money, he must produce 11% per year because of the 10% in fees you’re getting charged.”
And he wasn’t producing 11%+ annual investment returns for them.
This is why I became furious… He was ripping them off and they didn’t even know.
And things are far more uncertain now 10 years or so later…
Sky high market valuations
Inflation at its highest rate in 40 years at 7.9% in the U.S.
And war in Europe
All these things mean investing in any asset class is insanely risky now.
