Small business owners, I strongly recommend opening a new bank account that has just one purpose: tax savings.

Here's what I want you to do ↓

πŸ’° Open a separate savings account that you use ONLY for federal + state tax payments so that you're never spending ~that~ money for other business expenses.

Choose a high-yield savings account (at an FDIC-insured bank) so you can earn interest before you send that money to the government.

πŸ’° Set up automatic weekly or monthly transfers to your new account based on the tax savings number your accountant gave you.

πŸ’° Don't forget to make your estimated tax payments from this account! The IRS (and many states) allow you to schedule your payments in advance. For busy small business owners, that's a game-changer.

I would loooove to mind my own business...

Unfortunately, that involves telling small business owners in the TikTok comments section that just because their favorite influencer says they can write off their coffee shop work session doesn't make it true!!!

My business is making sure small business owners know exactly which expenses can legally lower their tax bill + building them long-term tax savings strategies. πŸ’°

You've probably heard that "the U.S. has a pay-as-you-go tax system", kay cool, but what does that meaaan?!

When you're an employee, your employer withholds federal income tax from your paycheck, which generally satisfies the IRS's desire to get paid as you make money (that is, if you fill out your W-4 correctly).

But when you're self-employed, that responsibility to pay your taxes throughout the year falls on you in the form of estimated taxes! 🫡

These are due ~roughly~ every quarter, and your accountant can help you determine how much you should pay to avoid penalties + interest.

P.S. That isn't your only new responsibility if you're self-employed... you've also got to worry about self-employment tax now. πŸ₯΄

These two things are just the tip of the iceberg on why I recommend that entrepreneurs work with a qualified accountant.

Kids are getting ready to go back to school, and surpriseeee I'm taking you back too! πŸ§‘β€πŸ«

Over the next few days, I'm sharing everything I WISH they taught you about taxes...

Starting with tax brackets ↓

We've all heard the story about someone who turned down a raise because they didn't want to pay more in taxes. That stems from misunderstanding how our tax system works!

Moving into a higher tax bracket does NOT mean that all of your money is going to be taxed more.

Just the money that falls into that tax bracket gets hit with the higher rate! πŸ’°

So please, accept the raise and leave lowering your tax bill to me!😏

Not all "tax strategies" you see on social media are endorsed by yours truly (an accountant who actually helps small business owners with taxes on the daily).

But the tax strategy on slide 4?

I'm giving that one a 980000/10 all day every day! 😏

Small business owners : I'm coming to you very earnestly and asking from the bottom of my heart... pleaaasee quit doing this! πŸ™

The temptation of saving on self-employment tax is very real. I get that!

But depending on your profit, it might not be the right time now (or ever) to make an S election for your small business.

Can an S election lead to tax savings? Absolutely! πŸ’Έ

But can it also cost you more?

With the need to run payroll, more admin work, and additional tax filings, absolutely!

At CK Business Advisors , we run your numbers FIRST to make absolutely sure that an S election is right for you (before it becomes an even bigger headache to reverse it).

Small Business Owners:Sometimes, what you think is a tax write-off and what the IRS does are living in two totally separate realities.

I'm here to bring you back down to earth (and hopefully prevent you from getting a nasty IRS notice!). πŸ™…

Sooo, there's some money that hits your account that the IRS ~doesn't~ want a part of?!

It's called nontaxable income, and it comes in the form of certain child support payments, gifts, inheritances, life insurance proceeds, workers' comp, qualifying scholarships, and more!

Here's the catch: even if you think the money isn't taxable, your accountant still needs to know about it. πŸ‘€

Related transactions like selling an inherited asset or using money from your scholarship to pay for room + board can be taxable.

So, even if you don't think you have to pay any taxes on it now, keep your accountant in the loop on where you got the money, why you received it, and what you're going to do with it in the future!
