BEWARE OF TAX SCAMS!!!!!

Consumer Alerts on Tax Scams
‪Please note that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels.
Note that the IRS will never:
Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.
Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone

Happy New Year All!!!

We are open and ready to serve you. But first, What You Need to Know
Expecting a refund? Some refunds must be held until February 15.

According to a new tax law change, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit.

This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.

The IRS will begin to release EITC/ACTC refunds starting February 15. However, the IRS cautions taxpayers that these refunds likely won’t arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until the week of February 27

Before you hand over your social security number and other important information to a stranger, here is some helpful Hints when choosing a Tax Return Preparer:

1. Be careful with tax preparers who claim they can obtain larger refunds than other preparers.
2. Avoid preparers who base their fee on a percentage of the amount of the refund.
3. Use a reputable tax professional who signs your tax return and provides you with a copy for your records.
4. Consider whether the individual or firm will be around to answer questions about the preparation of your tax return months, or even years, after the return has been filed.
5. Review your return before you sign it and ask questions on entries you don't understand.
6. No matter who prepares your tax return, you (the taxpayer) are ultimately responsible for all of the information on your tax return. Therefore, never sign a blank tax form.
7. Find out the person’s credentials. Only attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS in all matters including audits, collection and appeals. Other return preparers may only represent taxpayers for audits of returns they actually prepared.
8. Find out if the preparer is affiliated with a professional organization that provides its members with continuing education and resources and holds them to a code of ethics.
9. Ask questions. Do you know anyone who has used the tax professional? Were they satisfied with the service they received?

Warning: The IRS intends to crack down on inaccurate claims for earned income tax credits (EITCs) claimed on 2013 returns. And this time it means business.

This is a long-time bugaboo at the IRS. It often suspects that the EITC is improperly claimed on tax returns by taxpayers filing their own returns and some tax return preparers.

To find out if you qualify for this credit visit the IRS website www.irs.gov or give us a call. On Time Taxes committed to keeping you informed.
