It's every taxpayer's WORST nightmare: you go outside to check your mail and you've got an IRS audit notice waiting for you! 😱

Keep calm and keep reading to see what happens next:

First, you'll want to confirm that you've received a legitimate audit notice from the IRS. 📭

The IRS will send you a letter via certified mail stating your full name, tax ID number or SSN, the form number, and specific information about why your return is being examined.

🚫 The IRS will NEVER initiate an audit via telephone.

As soon as you’ve received a notice of an IRS audit, you should inform your accountant. The timeliness of your response is important, and you want to make sure you have all the documents requested to back up your position. 📲

🔎 Looking for a tax preparer?

While I'm a little biased and I'd say look no further, here are a few places you can search:

👉 Ask friends, family, and industry peers who they use to prepare their taxes. Make sure to do your due diligence to ensure they’re the right fit!

👉 Search the IRS’s Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications to sort by credentials and zip code.

👉 Search the directories of tax professional organizations like the NATP and NAEA. Look for my checklist post on how to do your due diligence!

Want your tax refund ASAP?!

Here are three things you want to avoid if you're expecting a tax refund this year:

1️⃣ Typos & Errors

Whether you mistyped your SSN, your spouse's name, your employer’s EIN, or your direct deposit info, typos can delay the processing of your tax refund.

2️⃣ Paper Filing

The IRS states that most refunds are issued within 21 days for e-filed returns. Returns filed by mail could take four weeks or longer!

3️⃣ Wait To File

The easiest way to get your refund ASAP is to file as soon as you have all of your tax documents!

I'm going to be brutally honest right now... DIY tax software may not be the right fit for you if:

❌ You own a small business or are self-employed
❌ You aren't sure about whether you qualify for certain deductions or credits
❌ You own rental properties
❌ You need to file in multiple states

Why?

All of these factors can make your tax return more complex.

It can be tough to understand all the nuances of the questions a DIY tax software will ask you!

On the other hand, it could be a good fit for you if:

✅ You and/or your spouse have only W-2 income
✅ You're confident in which credits you qualify for

Looking for a new tax preparer in 2024?

Doing your due diligence is *really* important to avoid ending up with a ghost preparer! 👻

Here are five things to check:

(1) Does your preparer have an active PTIN and plan to sign your tax return as the paid preparer?

(2) Is your preparer available all or most of the year to answer questions?

(3) Confirm that your preparer's fees are NOT based on a percentage of your refund

(4) Is your preparer qualified to represent you in front of the IRS (if you want this)? CPA or EA

And lastly, make sure you read real client reviews that aren't provided by the preparer!
