Does your grandchild quality for a free $1,000? Trump Accounts are officially open.
If you're a grandparent, here are a few questions worth considering:
➡️ My grandchild is 18 months old. Do they qualify for the $1,000?
Yes. Every U.S. citizen baby born since January 1, 2025, qualifies for a one-time $1,000 federal contribution.
➡️ Is there an income limit for the family?
No. Eligibility is based on the child's citizenship and birth date—not parent or grandparent income.
➡️ My grandchild is 7. Did they miss out?
Not entirely. Any U.S. citizen under 18 can have an account opened. The federal $1,000 contribution is only available to children born between 2025 and 2028, but older grandchildren can still benefit from the account's features.
➡️ Can grandparents contribute?
Absolutely. Grandparents can help build a child's future by contributing to the account. Combined contributions from parents, grandparents, family members, and the child are capped at $5,000 per year.
➡️ What should families know before contributing?
State tax treatment can vary. California, for example, does not currently conform. Before adding another savings vehicle to your grandchild's future, it's worth understanding how it fits alongside existing plans and gifting strategies.
Giving money is easy. Creating a thoughtful legacy is more complex. Whether you'd like to help fund a grandchild's future, coordinate with parents, or understand how these accounts fit into your family's overall plan, our team is here to help.
