There are plenty of good reasons someone might consider taking Social Security at 62.

The important thing is knowing what that decision really means before you make it.

I don't believe retirement decisions should be based on a rule of thumb. They should be based on understanding your choices, what you're gaining, and what you may be giving up.

Starting Social Security early can be tempting. After all, you've worked for years and the benefit is finally available.

But before making that decision, it's important to understand what you're giving up in exchange for receiving the money sooner.

This isn't just a decision about age 62. It's a decision that can affect your income for the rest of your life.

When we're planning for retirement, it's natural to focus on what life will look like while we're both here.

But some of the decisions couples make at retirement can affect the surviving spouse many years later.

I think that's a conversation we need to have before those decisions are made—not after.

We spend years planning for retirement as a couple. Two Social Security benefits, perhaps two pensions, shared savings and shared expenses.

But at some point, one person may have to manage that retirement alone.

It's worth knowing today whether your plan will still work then.

Most couples plan for retirement together. But have you ever stopped to think about what retirement looks like financially for the person who is left behind?

It's a conversation no one particularly wants to have, but it's an important one.

A good retirement plan shouldn't just work while you're both here. It should work for the surviving spouse, too.

I wish there were one perfect age to start Social Security. It would make retirement planning a whole lot easier.

But there isn't.

The right decision depends on you—your income, your other assets, your spouse, your health, and what you're trying to accomplish in retirement. That's why I believe this decision deserves more than a rule of thumb.

I've heard just about every reason for taking Social Security at 62—or waiting until 70.

But what was right for your neighbor, your friend or even your brother may not be right for you.

This is one retirement decision where I think it's worth slowing down and looking at your own numbers before deciding.

When should you start Social Security?

It's one of the questions I get asked most often, and the answer isn't always what people expect.

Sometimes waiting is the right decision. Sometimes it isn't. That's why I believe we need to run the numbers before making a decision that could affect the rest of your retirement.

Think about what groceries, utilities or even going out to dinner cost 15 years ago compared with today.

Now turn that around and look 15 years into the future.

That's something we can't afford to ignore when we're planning for retirement income.

Living a long life is something most of us hope for. But when it comes to retirement planning, it also means asking an important question:

Will the income plan you create at 65 still be working for you at 85 or 90?

That's why longevity is something we need to plan for, not just hope for.
