Before You Attend That “Free Dinner” Financial Seminar

You may have received an invitation offering a complimentary dinner along with a presentation about retirement planning, protecting your savings, or generating retirement income.

There is nothing inherently wrong with attending these events. Some seminars are educational, while others may also introduce financial products or services. The important thing is to understand what is being presented before making a financial decision.

A seminar is designed for an audience. Your financial strategy should be based on your individual circumstances.

If a product or strategy catches your attention, consider asking:
• How does the product work?
• What are its potential benefits, risks, and limitations?
• Are there surrender charges or withdrawal restrictions?
• How is interest or an index-linked credit calculated?
• How is the financial professional compensated?
• What alternatives are available?
• If I replace something I already own, what benefits or guarantees could I be giving up?

Annuities may be appropriate for certain individuals and circumstances. However, they can have surrender periods, withdrawal limitations, crediting provisions, and other contract terms that should be carefully considered.

Before making a change, take the information home and review it.

If you're a client of Premise Financial Group and something you hear at a seminar interests you, bring us the proposal, illustration, or product information. We would be happy to help you understand the strategy and discuss how it may relate to your financial objectives and existing financial strategy.

A complimentary dinner lasts an evening. A financial decision may have long-term implications.

Ask questions. Understand your options. Make an informed decision.

This material is for general informational purposes only and is not intended as individualized investment, insurance, tax, or legal advice. Neither New York Life Insurance Company nor its agents provide tax, legal, or accounting advice. Please consult your own tax, legal, or accounting professionals before making decisions concerning your individual circumstances.

Guarantees of insurance products are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Annuities are long-term financial products designed for retirement purposes and may be subject to fees, charges, limitations, and surrender periods. Product features and availability may vary.

People aged 70½ or older now have a way to support the causes they love while also creating a reliable stream of lifetime income, thanks to recent law changes that allow a once-in-a-lifetime transfer directly from an IRA to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust. When structured correctly, this transfer can be excluded from taxable income, and for those 73 or older, it may even count toward required minimum distributions. Read more about this strategy and then let’s explore whether this fits into your retirement or giving plans.
