Waiting until the end of the tax year to register for VAT?
HMRC might hit you with a retroactive penalty. ⚠️
As a UK freelancer, you are legally required to register the moment your taxable turnover hits the £90,000 threshold over any rolling 12-month period (or if you expect to cross it in the next 30 days alone).
But hitting the limit is only half the battle.
You also have to pick the right VAT scheme, or you will quietly bleed your cash flow:
- The Flat Rate Scheme: You pay a fixed, lower tax percentage to HMRC. This is perfect if you have very low business expenses.
- Cash Accounting: You only pay VAT after your clients actually pay you. This keeps your cash safe from unpaid invoices.
- Standard VAT: You report exactly what you invoice and what you buy. This is ideal if you have high supplier costs.
Decoding complex HMRC rules on your own can be quite a hassle.
