Did you know you can claim your parents even though they may not live with you? This the only exception to the rule, according to IRS rules. In order for a person to claim a possible dependent, they have to live with the taxpayer for more than 6 months, and provide more than 50 percent of support, except for your parents. The IRS understands that they are adults and want to have their independence. So you still can claim them even if they receive social security benefits!
