🚨 IRS account scam reminder

You do not need to “renew” or “verify” your ID.me account once you’ve already set it up to access your IRS Online Account.

Messages circulating that claim your ID.me verification is expiring—or that you need to click a link to renew it—are scams.

Don’t click the link. Don’t provide personal or financial information. If you need to access your IRS account, go directly to IRS.gov and sign in from there.

Some of these messages can look convincing.

A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) tells us what I already knew. Using paper and person to person communication with the IRS slows down processing/resolution of taxpayer issues with IRS. It is time to surrender and move over to the IRS Online Account for management of your tax issues. For those of you who are not familar with these accounts take a look at my recent video at centennial tax and accounting on how to establish an IRS Online Account.

For most taxpayers, the 2026 filing season was normal, a government report says. Those who filed paper returns or relied on paper refund checks faced delays because of a smaller IRS workforce and technology problems.
