A small favor:

If we've worked together or you've had a professional experience with me and feel comfortable sharing it, I'd really appreciate an honest Google review.

As I continue to grow, hearing directly from people I've interacted with helps others get a better sense of who I am and what they can expect if they decide to reach out.

Really appreciate the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce for welcoming Southpaw Financial!

This one means a bit more to me since Tahlequah has always been my home.

I grew up here, went to school here, met my wife here, and now my kids are getting to grow up here.

I started working in IT as a teenager at Quality Data Products, then went on to spend more than 20 years at Northeastern State University as both a student and employee.

Since becoming a Financial Advisor, I’ve had the opportunity to build my practice and work with individuals, families, and business owners here in Tahlequah. Getting to do that in the same community that has been such a big part of my life is pretty special.

I appreciate the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce for the welcome, and I’m looking forward to being even more involved in the community.

Officially a member of the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce!

We’re grateful for everyone who came out to celebrate with us, and for the opportunity to continue growing Southpaw Financial here.

Thank you, Tahlequah!

More small businesses are offering retirement plans. That creates some interesting planning opportunities for business owners.

According to new Gusto payroll data, the percentage of small businesses with an actively used retirement plan increased from 19% in 2019 to 31% in 2026.

Among businesses with fewer than 5 employees, adoption doubled from 10% to 20%.

A retirement plan is part of the financial structure of the business. For an owner, that opens up some important questions:

• Is the plan designed efficiently for both the owner and employees?

• Is the owner taking full advantage of the retirement and tax-planning opportunities available?

• Does the contribution and match structure still make sense as the business grows?

• Are employees actually using the benefit?

• How does the plan fit with the owner’s personal investments, long-term financial plan, and eventual exit from the business?

SECURE 2.0 has also created additional incentives for many small businesses to establish retirement plans, making this a good time for owners to take another look at their options.

Sometimes the opportunity is starting a plan. Sometimes it’s improving the one you already have.

If you own a small business and haven’t reviewed your retirement plan in a while, it’s worth taking another look.

This is a great video explaining why time in the market is much more profitable than timing the market, and also why dollar cost averaging (DCA) is such a good way to invest. It also shows why intentional diversification can help mitigate concentration risk.

College costs have continued to rise, but this graph shows something else happening at the same time: compounding.

Someone investing $150 a month over this period would have contributed a little over $30,000 of their own money. In this example, that investment grew to around $119,000, while the estimated cost of college reached about $103,000.

You don’t have to have the entire cost of college sitting in a savings account today.

Starting early gives you something incredibly valuable: time.

Even a relatively small amount invested consistently can make a big difference over 18 years.

When people ask me where the best place to invest their money is, I usually say, “It depends.”

One of the biggest factors is your time horizon. When are you actually going to need the money?

Historically, the stock market has been a great place to build wealth over 10, 20, or 30 years. But if you’re saving for a purchase you plan to make in the next couple of years, stocks may carry more risk than your timeline can afford.

Time matters. The right investment depends a lot on when you need the money.

Peter Lynch explains it well here.
