HEY GUYS 👋 THE TAX REFEREE HERE !
If you have multiple qualifying children under age 17, you add $2,000 for each child in Step 3 of the IRS Form W-4.
Here are some EXAMPLES:
1 child under 17 → Enter $2,000
2 children under 17 → Enter $4,000
3 children under 17 → Enter $6,000
4 children under 17 → Enter $8,000
For EXAMPLE, if you're Head of Household with 3 qualifying children under age 17, your W-4 would typically look like this:
Step 1: Your personal information
Step 2: Complete only if you have more than one job or your spouse also works (otherwise you can usually leave it blank)
Step 3: Enter $6,000
Step 4: Leave blank unless you want additional withholding or have other income/deductions
Step 5: Sign and date
💡A few important notes:
A qualifying child generally must be under age 17 at the end of the tax year, have a valid Social Security number, and meet the IRS relationship, residency, and support tests.
💡Claiming dependents on your W-4 reduces the amount of federal income tax withheld from your paycheck. It does NOT change how many dependents you claim on your tax return—you should ONLY claim children you actually qualify to claim.
If you're trying to figure out the best way to fill out a W-4 for your specific situation, tell me:
- Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, or Head of Household)
- How many children under 17 you have
- Whether you have one job or multiple jobs (or your spouse works) And approximately how much you earn per pay period.
I can walk you through exactly what to enter on each step. 🫶🏾
