I was making good money, but I was still making poor financial choices because I did not have a healthy money mindset yet.
And the truth is, I did not realize how much my money mindset had been shaped by what I saw growing up.
I was taught to pay my bills on time, but I was not taught credit education.
And there is a difference.
Growing up, I understood that bills needed to be paid. I understood responsibility. I understood doing what you had to do to survive. But I did not fully understand how credit worked, how financial decisions could affect my future, or how important it was to prepare beyond just paying monthly bills.
About 18 years ago, when I went through my divorce, I had to restart my life. I was trying to figure out how to pay bills, raise my children, and rebuild from a place I never expected to be.
Eventually, I recovered financially. I was making good money each month, but my mindset around money was still not where it needed to be.
I was traveling.
Buying clothes almost every weekend.
Going out with friends.
Spending money on things that made me feel good in the moment.
But looking back, I realize some of that money could have been used differently.
I could have been repairing my credit sooner.
Preparing to purchase a home.
Investing.
Getting proper life insurance in place.
Hiring mentors to teach me financial literacy, credit, business, and wealth-building strategies.
Putting money into things that could have created more revenue for my household.
But the truth is, I was doing what I knew.
And a lot of what I knew came from what I saw growing up.
That is why I believe financial mindsets can be passed down from generation to generation. Not because our families did not love us. Not because they did not work hard. But because many of them were never taught the information either.
Sometimes survival becomes the lesson.
But survival cannot be the only lesson we pass down.
The way we view money, credit, debt, ownership, protection, and investing can affect not only our lives, but the lives of our children and future generations.
That is why breaking unhealthy financial patterns is so important.
You become the pattern breaker when you decide to think differently, choose differently, and learn what you were never taught.
Changing my mindset changed my finances.
Changing my mindset changed my credit.
Changing my mindset changed how I teach my children.
Now they have knowledge I did not have at their age. They understand that money is not just for spending. Credit is not just a score. Life insurance is not just a policy. Business and ownership are not just dreams. These are tools that can help build a stronger future.
I share this because someone may be in a season where they are making money but still feel stuck. Someone may be recovering from a financial setback. Someone may be repeating patterns they did not even realize they learned.
But where you started does not have to be where you stay.
You can learn.
You can rebuild.
You can prepare.
You can make different choices.
You can become the one who changes the financial story for your family.
Your life depends on your mindset shifting.
And your future generations will benefit from the choices you make today.
