What does it actually mean to be "good with money?"

Here's a question for the business owners in my network:

When someone says they're "good with money," what does that really mean?

Does it mean you can read every financial statement, categorize every transaction, and reconcile every account yourself?

Or does it mean you've built a system where your finances are accurate, up to date, and handled by someone you trust?

I don't think it has to be the first one.

Most successful business owners aren't experts at bookkeeping, payroll, taxes, marketing, sales, and operations. They're experts at building businesses—and they know when to lean on professionals who can help them do it better.

Being financially responsible isn't about doing everything yourself.

It's about making sure your finances are taken care of, numbers are reliable, your decisions are based on accurate information, and you always know where your business stands.

That's what "good with money" looks like to me.

How do you define it?

Hot take: That one shared bank account is costing your business more than it's saving you.

Not because bank accounts are expensive.

Because confusion is.

Every time a personal expense ends up in your business account—or vice versa—you've created another question that has to be answered later.

Multiply that by hundreds of transactions over a year, and suddenly tax season feels less like filing a return.....and more like conducting an investigation.

Hours get spent sorting receipts, explaining transactions, and trying to remember what happened six months ago.

A separate business bank account isn't an "I'll get around to it someday" milestone.

It's one of the simplest habits you can build to save time, reduce stress, and keep your financial reports accurate.

Sometimes the biggest improvements in your bookkeeping don't come from better software.

They come from better habits.

Are your business and personal finances completely separate, or are they still sharing the same account?

"Bookkeeping is just data entry."

Myth: Bookkeeping is basically typing numbers into a program
Reality: Anyone can enter a transaction, the real skill is knowing:
• Which account a transaction belongs in.
• Whether it's deductible.
• How it impacts your financial statements.
• Whether it changes the story your numbers are telling.

Because a bookkeeping file filled with incorrectly categorized transactions is just as misleading as having no books at all.

Good bookkeeping isn't about typing.

It's about turning thousands of transactions into information you can actually use to make better business decisions.

Your Profit & Loss statement shouldn't feel like it's written in another language.

You should be able to look at your financial reports and quickly understand:
• Where your money is coming from.
• Where it's going.
• What's working.
• And what needs your attention.

That's the difference between having books.....and having financial clarity.

Have your financial reports ever actually been explained to you in plain English, or have they mostly just been handed to you at tax time?

The reconciliation that saved a client $1,400.

One of the most valuable parts of bookkeeping is also one of the least exciting.

Monthly reconciliations.

Last year, I was reconciling a client's accounts when I noticed something didn't look right.

The same vendor had been paid twice for the same expense—once when the invoice was received, and again nearly three months later.

A quick phone call was all it took.

10 minutes of polite conversations, the duplicate payment was confirmed, and a $1,400 refund was on its way.

Had we waited until year-end, there's a good chance it would have been buried in thousands of transactions and written off as "one of those things."

That's why bookkeeping isn't just about keeping your records organized.

It's about catching the small mistakes before they become expensive ones.

The truth is, most business owners don't lose money through one catastrophic event.

They lose it through dozens of small leaks that nobody notices.

Sometimes, the most valuable work is the work that prevents a problem before you ever know it existed.

What's the biggest financial mistake you've caught in your business before it became a bigger problem?

The 2-minute habit that can dramatically improve your cash flow.

Most business owners don't have a collections problem.

They have a follow-up problem.

Invoices get sent... then everyone gets busy.

Before you know it, a payment that's 15 days late turns into 45, then 60, and eventually becomes "I'm sure they'll pay eventually."

Here's a simple habit I recommend to every business owner:

📅 On the 1st and 15th of every month, spend two minutes reviewing your outstanding invoices.

That's it.
• Check what's overdue.
• Send a friendly follow-up email.
• Confirm there aren't any billing issues.
• Move on with your day.

It's not about being aggressive—it's about being consistent.

Most clients aren't intentionally avoiding payment. They're busy too. Often, a polite reminder is all it takes to move your invoice back to the top of their priority list.

Small habits like this can have a surprisingly large impact on your cash flow over the course of a year.

Consistency beats memory every time.

What's one simple financial habit that's made a big difference in your business?

Nine months behind.

That's where one client was when they reached out.

Not because they were irresponsible.

Not because they didn't care.

Because they were busy doing what business owners do—serving customers, managing employees, solving problems, and trying to keep everything moving.
Bookkeeping became "I'll get to it next month."

Then next month became nine.

We didn't try to fix everything at once.

We started with the oldest month and worked forward—one reconciliation, one account, one month at a time.

Six weeks later, everything was caught up.

The financial statements finally reflected reality.

But the biggest change wasn't on the Profit & Loss.

It was the weight that came off their shoulders.

They could finally make decisions with confidence instead of guessing. They knew where the business stood, what was coming in, what was going out, and what needed attention.

Sometimes the biggest value of clean books isn't better reports.
It's peace of mind.

If your bookkeeping feels overwhelming, don't think about fixing nine months. Just think about taking the first step.

Everyone starts somewhere.

Happy Independence Day!

Today we celebrate 250 years of American independence—and the freedom to dream, build, and create something of our own.

As a small business owner, I've always believed that entrepreneurship is one of the greatest expressions of that freedom.

Every day, millions of business owners across this country take a chance on themselves. They create jobs, serve their communities, support local families, and help drive the American economy forward.

That's something worth celebrating.

At OakPoint Bookkeeping, I'm grateful for the opportunity to help those business owners spend less time worrying about their numbers and more time doing what they do best—growing the businesses they worked so hard to build.

Whether you're enjoying time with family, firing up the grill, or watching fireworks tonight, I hope you have a safe and meaningful Fourth of July.

Happy 250th Birthday, America. 🇺🇸

And thank you to everyone who continues to build the American dream—one small business at a time.

Quick math that's worth doing.

Let's say you spend about 4 hours each week on bookkeeping.

Organizing receipts. Categorizing transactions. Reconciling accounts. Following up on invoices. Getting everything ready for tax season.

That adds up to 208 hours a year.

That's more than five full work weeks spent working on your books instead of on your business. 🥴

Now, I'm not saying every business owner should outsource their bookkeeping.

Some business owners genuinely enjoy it. Others have efficient systems in place and it makes sense to keep it in-house.

But it should be an intentional decision—not something you do simply because it's always been on your plate.

Ask yourself:
• Could those 200+ hours be spent serving more clients?
• Growing your business?
• Developing new services?
• Or simply being home for dinner more often?

Every business owner has the same 24 hours in a day.

The question isn't whether bookkeeping is important—it absolutely is.

The question is whether you're the right person to be doing it.

If you had five extra work weeks every year, how would you spend them?
Every business owner has the same 24 hours in a day.

I started OakPoint because I kept seeing the same pattern among my business owner friends — and it bothered me.

They're working incredibly hard. Building something real from the ground up. Showing up every day for their customers, their team, their family.

And then staying up late, stressed, trying to make sense of their finances. Or avoiding it entirely and just hoping that tax season would somehow sort itself out.

The business part? They had that handled. They were good at what they did. They had customers who trusted them and a service worth paying for.

The financial organization part? That's where things quietly fell apart.

And what struck me every time wasn't just the financial impact — it was the personal one. The business owner who couldn't be fully present at their kid's game because they were mentally running through what needed to get caught up this weekend. The one who dreaded checking their bank account because they weren't sure what they'd find. The one who described their relationship with their own finances as "I just try not to think about it."

That's not what running a business is supposed to feel like.

I believe every business owner deserves to know exactly where they stand financially — without it consuming their evenings, their weekends, or their mental energy.

I believe bookkeeping should give you confidence, not anxiety.

And I believe the right bookkeeper doesn't just keep your records clean — they help you feel in control of something that probably hasn't felt that way in a while.

That's what I built OakPoint to do.

If your books feel like a weight you've been carrying, I'd genuinely love to have a conversation about what a better system could look like for your business.

23/06/2026

Most business owners I work with can't answer this question off the top of their head:

"What was your net profit last month?"

Not because they don't care. But because nobody's been keeping track in a way that makes it easy to know.

That's not a character flaw. That's a missing system.

When your books are current and organized, answering that question takes about 30 seconds. You open a report, and there it is.

If you're still piecing it together from memory and bank statements — the system is the problem, not you.

And systems are fixable.

What financial number do you wish you had instant visibility into right now?
