The state is trying to pass legislation (Senate Bill 993) that would impose a sales tax on business services, including professional services provided by CPAs. In an already challenging business climate, SB 993 would impose a massive new tax that will needlessly complicate an already complex state tax code and add a substantial new tax burden to California businesses and consumers without any corresponding benefit.

Sen. Robert Hertzberg says the bill would better align the state's tax code with shifts in the economy. Business interest groups argue the legislation would place a disproportionate burden on small businesses.
