If you've ever wished you had a CFO in your corner but winced at the price tag, you're in good company. Between salary, benefits, and a recruiting fee that can run 20 to 30 percent of first-year pay, a full-time hire is out of reach for most growing businesses.

The good news? You don't have to choose between expert guidance and your budget.

A lot of firms show up once a year, file your return, and disappear until next tax season. That's not how we operate.

At Zabel Munson, we work with business owners year round on cash flow, pricing, tax strategy, and long-term value, one team with the full financial picture, instead of a patchwork of advisors who don't talk to each other.

If you want a financial partner instead of a once-a-year appointment, let's talk. [email protected] | 651.605.2301

Most businesses start planning for next year three weeks into January, working off numbers that are already stale. Starting now, with a full quarter of runway left, changes what's actually possible, budgets, staffing, pricing, all of it.

A real Q4 plan looks at where you'll land against this year's budget and what needs to happen before December 31st for tax purposes. Both get harder to influence the longer you wait.

Most tax conversations happen at filing season, which is exactly the moment when it's too late to change most of the outcome.

There's still time right now to act on things like accelerating deductions, maxing out retirement contributions, or clearing out obsolete inventory before the year closes out for good.

This article lays out what's worth doing while you still have runway: https://zabelmunson.com/your-cpa-should-be-telling-you-this-before-december-not-after/

Most owners can tell you their revenue to the penny. Far fewer can tell you their Value Builder Score, even though it's the number buyers and investors actually weigh.

The free 13-minute assessment scores your business across eight drivers, including recurring revenue, customer concentration, and how dependent the business is on you personally. In a study of over 30,000 businesses, those scoring 80 or higher sold at a 71% premium over average-scoring businesses.

We don't just hand you a number, we use it to build a real plan for closing the gap. Take the free assessment here: https://score.valuebuildersystem.com/zabel-co-llc/todd-zabel

Owner dependency means the business can't run without you in the room. If every client relationship, big decision, or approval has to go through you personally, that's owner dependency, even if you'd never call it that.

It matters because buyers price it in. Ask yourself what would happen if you were unreachable for two weeks. If the honest answer involves things slowing down or falling apart, that's the risk a buyer sees, and it's what gets discounted off your price.

The fix is gradual: pick one thing only you currently handle, document exactly how you do it, then hand it to someone else. Repeat that a few times a year and the business gets both more valuable and easier to run.

Valuation experts are increasingly treating AI adoption as a real, measurable driver of enterprise value, not just an efficiency play.

The businesses actually capturing that value aren't using AI to cut headcount. They're using it to clear repetitive work off their team's plate, freeing people up for the work that actually moves the business forward.

We wrote about how that shift plays out in practice, and what to prioritize first: https://zabelmunson.com/using-ai-to-drive-your-companys-value/

Owner compensation is one of the easiest numbers to get wrong, and one of the most scrutinized by the IRS. Pay yourself too little and lean on distributions instead, and you're not just masking what the business costs to run, you're underpaying payroll taxes, which is exactly the pattern the IRS has built entire audit campaigns around.

Reasonable compensation isn't a number you set once. It's based on your role, your hours, and what someone in a comparable position would actually earn, and it should move as your business does.

If your salary hasn't changed in years while your business has grown, that's a conversation worth having before your next return is filed.

Two businesses can post identical revenue and be standing on completely different ground. One has 90 days of cash reserves and a forecast it actually trusts. The other is one slow month, or one lost client, away from a real problem.

Revenue growth gets the attention, but it's liquidity and financial discipline that determine who's still standing when conditions tighten.

Q4 has a way of exposing decisions that got made on instinct instead of information: pricing that never got revisited, staffing that's a step behind demand, inventory tying up cash you'll want later.

A Fractional CFO gives you what a full-time CFO would build, a 13-week cash flow forecast, reporting you can actually act on, and a second set of eyes on every major decision, without the six-figure salary and benefits that come with a full-time hire.

If Q4 planning usually starts in a scramble, let's build the plan now instead. [email protected] | 651.605.2301
