The IRS has increased mileage rates effective July 1, 2026!

The business use rate increased to $.76 per mile from $.725.

The medical mileage rate increased to $.235 per mile from $.205.

The charitable mileage rate is fixed by law, so it remains at $.14 per mile.

We already started our celebrations early with company lunch today.

Our office will be open until noon on Friday, July 3. We will be closed all day on Monday, July 6, in celebration of Independence Day.

Trump Accounts will officially launch next month, on July 4, 2026! The government will put $1,000 in each Trump Account set up for children born between 2025 and 2028. It's a one-time receipt, but parents or others can add up to $5,000 in additional money each year until the child turns 18. Of this amount, up to $2,500 can be funded by an employer of the parent.

Parents elect to open a Trump Account by filing Form 4547 and will subsequently receive an e-mail confirming the election and containing instructions for creating the account in a Trump Accounts app.

Some drawbacks:

* Distributions will be taxed in a manner similar to withdrawals from traditional IRAs and generally can't be taken until the beneficiary turns 18.
* Funds can be invested only in certain stock mutual funds or exchanged-traded funds
* Parents, relatives, etc. can't deduct any contributions made.

You can gift money (or other assets) to family or friends without worrying about taxes or paperwork! Helping a child with a down payment or supporting a family member can be done without negative tax consequences.

• For 2026, you can give up to $19,000 (same as in 2025) to any one person in one year without triggering federal gift tax reporting.
• If you’re married and both spouses give, you can effectively double that: up to $38,000 per recipient per year by gift-splitting.

Will the IRS increase the standard mileage rate midyear?

It has happened before. When gas prices spiked in the first half of 2008, 2011 and 2012, the mileage rate was increased for the final six months of those years. Certainly gas prices have gone up dramatically this year, maybe enough to trigger an adjustment?

The current mileage rate for 2026 is $.725/mile for business driving, $.205/mile for medical travel and military moves, and $.14/mile for charitable trips. The latter will not change because it is fixed by statute.

Did you know the IRS is required to pay interest on a tax refund when it is not issued within 45 days of the tax return's filing deadline (typically April 15th) or 45 days after the return is actually filed, whichever is later? For late-filed returns, the 45-day clock begins on the date the IRS receives the return. Interest is calculated at a rate set quarterly and compounds daily.

Heads up for 2026: Nonitemizing taxpayers will get a nice tax break for their charitable donations. They will be able to deduct up to $1,000 of charitable CASH gifts without having to itemize on Schedule A. The amount is $2,000 for joint filers.
