IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said he expects the 2025 filing season to build on the success of the two previous seasons if Congress maintains funding.

Among cases closed in fiscal year 2024, identity theft victims waited on average over 22 months for the IRS to resolve their cases and issue refunds to the victims.

These delays impacted nearly half a million taxpayers and were even worse than the delays seen in FY 2023, when cases took nearly 19 months to resolve.

Collins again called these delays “unconscionable” and recommended the IRS prioritize identity theft case resolution by keeping all IDTVA employees focused on these cases rather than reassigning them to answer telephone calls during the filing season. In addition, she urged the agency to reduce case resolution time to 90 days or less.
