MONDAY, JULY 20: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AI BECOMES USEFUL?
Most people do not begin using AI because they want a long-term collaborative relationship with a machine. They begin because they need help with something -- a difficult search; a complicated document; a work project; a health concern; verbal or written communication they want to practice; a decision they do not have enough time or mental space to process alone. They may also just try it out because someone they know mentioned using it and they think, "Why not, what do I have to lose?"
Then AI turns out to be useful. So, the human returns with another question, then another project, then something from a completely different part of life, because they have gotten information, help, or support with other situations. I call this AI creep. And it's happening to many of us, including people who do not actually want to use AI and have concerns about it.
So what happens next? Over time, context accumulates. The interaction begins to include earlier decisions, recurring priorities, unfinished ideas, individual preferences, and patterns that may be difficult for the human to recognize while living through them.
That is where something changes -- AI is no longer helping only with the task directly in front of the human. Instead, it is participating in an increasingly continuous private co-workspace.
The value does not come only from what AI can produce in one interaction. Some of the greatest value comes from continuity. Longitudinal tracking of patterns with AI assistance can help the human be more careful and mindful in their thought, social and professional lives. It certainly has for me, which is one reason I started writing about AI nearly a year ago.
Because of this dynamic, AI Creep and IntimAIcy can develop very naturally through the following loop: Usefulness brings the human back; Repeated use creates context; Context makes future collaboration more useful. And usefulness expands again.
As the old saying goes, "Wash, rinse, repeat."
Question: When did AI shift from helping you with isolated tasks to becoming part of an ongoing workflow?
