Did you know? The average U.S. household’s electric bill jumps nearly $100 more per month during the summer ☀️💸 — largely due to air conditioning. Add in 40% of Americans reporting increased spending on summer travel and activities, and it’s no surprise that budgets can start to "overheat.“

But a little smart planning can help you stay financially cool:

1️⃣ Budget for summer spending: Create a seasonal budget that accounts for increased utility bills, vacations, kids’ camps, and extra dining out. Anticipating these expenses keeps them from sneaking up on your credit card.

2️⃣ Tame your energy costs:
Set your thermostat to 78°F when home, 85°F when away (DOE recommendation. Each degree you raise your thermostat in the summer can lead to a 1-3% reduction in your energy bill.)
Use ceiling fans to circulate cool air more efficiently.
Run major appliances (dishwasher, washer/dryer) in the cooler evening hours.

3️⃣ Watch for “heat wave impulse buys”: Online shopping spikes during extreme weather events. Be mindful of “comfort shopping” while staying indoors — pause before hitting "buy now."
