The average refund amount was $1,963 as of Feb. 3, down 10.8% from $2,201 the same period last year.

Tax season is already complicated. It only gets more complicated when "changes" are made during the season that could potentially affect millions of returns already filed and to be filed.

More than 20 states authorized tax rebates last year. The IRS was asking millions of taxpayers in these states including California, Colorado and Florida who received tax rebates to hold off on filing their taxes but updated their guidance Friday, February 10th to indicate that for the most part, these rebates won't be taxable. There are some exceptions though.

This Monday, January 23, 2023, marks the beginning of the 2023 tax season and the IRS will begin accepting and processing 2022 tax year returns.

The tax deadline is Tuesday, April 18, allowing for three extra days to file this year!

April 18 Deadline for Individuals
The deadline for filing Form 1040 individual tax returns is April 18, 2022. Form 4868 may be filed to extend the due date until October 17, however, that does not extend the time to pay any tax due. Extensions and payments must also be filed by the April 18 deadline to be considered timely.
