In our October letter we highlighted our concern about the Inflation indicators escalating at an unsustainable pace. On the last day of the month, Chairman Powell finally acknowledged that he needs to retire the word "Transitory" when describing inflation. This change in language which suggested a quicker than anticipated rate increase by the Federal Reserve and the uncertainty over the new Omicron variant sent the markets into a tailspin at the end of the month.

As we move into October, check out our end of the month September market update:

The global markets struggled in the final month of the third quarter. Almost every financial asset underperformed with the notable exception of oil as inflation fears weighed on the market. As we continued to talk about, the market is very concerned inflation is not temporary or "transitory" as the Federal Reserve suggests.

In the US, the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100, and Russell 2000 growth indexes all fell in September dropping 4.80%, 5.62% and 3.62% respectively.

Once again most major US equity indexes hit record highs during the month of August despite a drop in consumer confidence and the aggressive spread of the Delta variant.

Second quarter gross domestic product which measures the final market value of all goods and services produced increased by 6.60% in the US evidencing a significant recovery in the economy.
