The Trump administration is preparing to garnish wages and seize tax refunds and Social Security payments from nearly 10 million Americans in default on their federal student loans, according to five sources familiar with the plans.

The Treasury Department could hire private debt collectors as soon as next month. But the sources say the plan is unlikely to be made public until after the midterms. One source told reporters it would be ā€œpolitically insaneā€ to do it before Election Day.

Treasury staff warned last year that the crackdown would hit Trumpā€™s own supporters hard: low-income workers already struggling to keep their jobs. Advocates say it will mean seized refunds, garnished paychecks, and less money for food and rent.
